I must now teach my children how to properly use a firearm...

I am curious as to why you group gun owners in with religious morons. If anything I own guns to protect myself from people like that.

And actually I don't really own guns for protection as it would be the absolute last resort. I own them for hunting/sport shooting. Children need to know and respect the power of a firearm, simply telling them to stay away from them is dumb and unnecessary - do you run away every time you see a gun?

first off he was joking lol. secondly I clicked on this link thinking it was going to be a complete washout of hippies vs. gun nuts like these threads generally spiral into. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of intelligent and practical responses of you guys.

if I ever had a kid you can be sure he'll be shooting guns and making explosives---if only because of the genes lol.

 I just think teaching kids to be scared of guns leads them to have a similar mindset when older. Seems vaginal.

you keep exaggerating an element of fear.  i didn't say teach the kid to fear the gun.  i said teach the kid to respect it and thus not to touch, since they lack experience.

however, i would advise them to fear the gun in the hands of someone unqualified; i.e. when their friend is playing with his dad's pistol unsupervised.  that's just a recipe for disaster that i think any smart child should avoid.

you know about guns and can teach safety, great.  many people simply have no need for guns as far as they're concerned, so they don't own them.  particularly in large cities.  many, many, many people.  for these people, it makes complete sense for them to teach their children simply not to touch guns.  it won't make a boy any more effeminate.  it won't affect his developing masculinity in any way whatsoever.

I just don't see how you can teach someone to not touch something because it is so dangerous - yet they are not supposed to fear it? Seems like conflicting arguments.

the same way you teach a kid not to try to drive a car because it's dangerous.  but that needn't mean kids are afraid of being around cars.

you teach them that the item demands respect when handled and need be handled only by those afforded the proper education, but that it's completely harmless when left alone.  i don't think fear has to have anything to do with it.

That's a fair comparison, but firearms definitely possess a different stigma than cars do. And IME people who don't like to handle firearms seem to be afraid of them/being around them. That might have to do more with acculturation, but it tends to be the case nonetheless.

Naw, if they want to use them when they are old enough that is something they will need to learn on their own time.
Similarly I would not teach them how to use or produce drugs; but when they are old enough they can learn that on their own time.

So what happens when your kid is playing at a friends house and they find a loaded firearm?

It's just like teaching a kid to look both ways before they cross the street. Or not to play with matches. You don't leave it up to them to teach themselves. That's just fucking irresponsible.

i'm pretty sure someone who isn't going to teach their children about firearm safety is just going to teach them NOT to touch guns at all.  so if they should find a gun at their friend's house, they simply refuse to touch it.  there's nothing irresponsible about that lesson.

what about the kid thats touching it it will probolybe pointed at your kid

i addressed that only 5 posts ahead of yours.

and moeron, you're right that a lot of people are afraid of guns.  but my point is that a child doesn't need to be taught that fear, nor should [s]he, even if they aren't well-versed in gun safety.  but that's where the aptitude of parenting comes in.

I agree, I am just curious as to how you effectively convince a child to stay away from something as intriguing as a gun.

Exactly, especially when kids tend to try and figure out what the big fuss is over something. Have you ever been told by your parents not to touch something in the house under any circumstances? What's the first thing you do...

You fucking touch it.

Taking the curiosity out of it is the key.
