Do you believe in corporal punishment for children?
    #4468578 - 07/29/05 12:48 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

(spanking, slapping, grabbing, etc...)

I do. There were times when I deserved to have my little butt whooped on. I should add that I was never beat or anything.

Everybody I know that didn't get spanked as a kid ended up all spoiled and useless.

Depends what form of corporal punishment. I think spanking is warranted under certain circumstances. But hitting, slapping, etc. shouldn't be used.

Ditto. I got the wooden spoon or open hand on several occasions and I turned out OK as far as I'm concerned. All these little bastard children running around nowadays, someone ought to smack some sense into them.

I believe in it very much so. Not so much the slapping and grabbing, but spanking definitely.

I think if more parents spanked for really bad behavior their kids wouldn't act like little assholes.

Many times I've been out in public and seen some little kid acting up or throwing a fit and I just want to say to the parent, "Hey, you should bust his/her ass and maybe they wouldn't act like that!"

LET THE BEATINGS BEGIN!!!!!!!!!! :spank:

Exactly.  I used to be against corporal punishment, until I got the job I have now, where I work with kids on a daily basis.  I've very much come to appreciate parents who keep their kids in line.

Dude...you should be the "cranky carnie". You should have a paddle at the ready to spank little kids who get out of line.

I work with kids on a daily basis also and it amazes me how people just hand kids a piece of candy and say, "now please behave little Johnny."

If a kid knows they can get over on you, then they will act however they want.

I was in a grocery store about a week ago and I saw a 10 year old girl crying and moping. The mom started saying, "That's it! When we get home I am calling a social worker."

You can't handle your kid so you need a social worker to do it? Just whoop on the kid some and she'll learn.

Grr...

OK. Here is the rule. Don't hit kids.

Ever. For any reason.

First of all, unless you have a huge amount of self control, you could lose your temper at some point and hurt the kid. Better to not take the chance. If hitting kids is something you do to control them, pretty soon it becomes you hit them when they start to bother you. This quickly can descend into abuse. You are arrogant if you think you can control it. There is a chance you can't. Maybe one day work goes really bad and you come home pissed off and your kid says something that hits a nerve from what happened at work. If you are used to hitting your kids, you're going to scare the shit out of them.

Second, you're hitting kids. Don't do it. Look at kids. Ahh, they are cute, huh? Do you really want to intentionally inflict anxiety and pain on them?

Third, all of you who advocate child abuse to control children, and say the discipline you got as a child didn't hurt you, look at yourselves. You think hitting kids is OK! You have to be pretty fucked up to see some kid misbehaving and think "What that kid really needs is to be hit."

Do not hit kids. Ever.

Spanking is not child abuse.

When I got spanked I deserved it. Anybody I know who didn't get spanked, their parents coddled them and gave into all of their demands. These former kids are now fucked up because they never got any discipline.

Fuck that. Beat your kids and they'll respect you. Children are not all cute and sometimes they need to be taught a lesson.

tmok...

It's not that I think I'm arrogant, I just think it's a part of my responsibility as a parent to police my child's behavior the best way possible. Sometimes this includes spanking, sometimes not.

The key is being responsible. Of course, if you hit your child out of pure anger, then that's a problem.

But if you use spanking as a responsible tool to enforce/deter certain types of behavior, then IMO you will not have to worry about it descending into abuse.

whip em... they'll be brats if ya don't.  When disciplined correctly it never developes into abuse.

People that want to pretend that they are perfect parents and not whip their kids will never have perfect kids.  A thin line exists with compromise allowing either to fall short of perfection and avoid abuse.  That compromise is attained with an intimidating leather strap.
