I had a bout of nostalgia and bought the first and second seasons on DVD a while back.
I still wonder how they managed to get the episode where Toastman burns the Constitution on TV. Granted most kids probably missed it entirely but it stands to reason that that is one of the edgiest cartoon scenes I've ever seen.
Happy happy, joy joy!

I'm from that generation.
When I was a kid, I still knew that it was crass and full of non sequiturs (though I didn't know the term "non sequitur").
I actually didn't find it very funny back then, either. In many ways the show was more appropriate for adults, from an appreciation viewpoint as well as the obvious content appropriateness viewpoint.

I saw the very first episode the very first night it premiered alongside DOUG and a couple other late night nickelodeon cartoons.
I was 11 I think. I was laughing so hard my mom thought I was having a seizure.
I used to have the R&S gameboy game when I was a teenager too... it wasn't that great... but then again, most old school gameboy games weren't.

I also grew up on a steady diet of Ren & Stimpy. I remembered a lot of the jokes and insanity sailing over my head at a young age and just finding the visual gags funny (e.g. talking, ill-tempered horses). When I watch it now it's way funnier than it was when I was a kid and I get more subtleties such as Ren & Stimpy's obvious gayness... You're right about it being more of an adult cartoon and it's one of those cartoons that both kids and adults can appreciate on different levels a la The Muppet Show.

the first few seasons of ren and stimpy rocked, but afther the fourth or fifth one ,i believe, it was taken over by some animation company owned by nickalodeon, they tried copying the original script writers and artist,

Yea the first four seasons or so were run by John K and his company, SPUMCO.
Nickelodeon took over after the fourth season and the previous assistant director, Bob Camp became the head honcho on the series.
I don't know what, exactly, caused it. I heard all kinds of rumors back in the day... rumors that John K wasn't getting the creative freedom he wanted or that Nick thought R&S were getting too crazy (R&S out west was the last John K episode, the one where they had the song about hanging themselves)... One way or another they outed John K and spumco and the show just relied on cliche' humor. You didn't notice it so much for a few episodes, but then it got really obvious.

i remember ren and stimpy being kind of disturbing but I liked it back in the day... mostly I remember the gross detailed close ups they would do.

Far and away the most disturbing episode was the one with the tooth beavers. I know you guys know what I'm talking about!
If not, this will jot your repressed memories...

That episode was a fantastic public service announcement. It got me to brush my teeth for fear of retaliation from the dreaded tooth beavers... and who said this show had no redeeming social value

What is the name of the piece that plays during the very first video of the thread, when they are looking at the horse... I've heard it before...

That's Le Carnival des Animaux (or Carnival of the Animals): The Aquarium by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns.

Thanks... it just hit me; it was from the simpsons, that's where I first heard it. I really loved it the first time I heard it... I need to learn to play it.

the first episode i ever saw was when Ren was keeping his farts in jars in the fridge and he goes on vacation and asks Stimpy to look after the fart jars and Stimpy breaks one of the jars and Ren decides they can no longer be friends
there was also a ren and stimpy game for the sega genesis i used to play at my friend's house, good times
how about when stimpy gives birth to "Stinky"
