Naw, if they want to use them when they are old enough that is something they will need to learn on their own time.
Similarly I would not teach them how to use or produce drugs; but when they are old enough they can learn that on their own time.

Its un-American to not teach your children gun safety and how to shoot.Gun safety should be taught at schools in case a kid goes to his friends house who has access to firearms. Manufacturing drugs and guns have nothing in common:facepalm:

Well, I don't plan on having kids, but if it happens or I end up with nieces and nephews, you're damn right I'm gonna teach them. My grandfather taught me how to shoot a rifle around 8 and a handgun around 11.

So what happens when your kid is playing at a friends house and they find a loaded firearm?

It's just like teaching a kid to look both ways before they cross the street. Or not to play with matches. You don't leave it up to them to teach themselves. That's just fucking irresponsible.

i'm pretty sure someone who isn't going to teach their children about firearm safety is just going to teach them NOT to touch guns at all.  so if they should find a gun at their friend's house, they simply refuse to touch it.  there's nothing irresponsible about that lesson.

I learned to use a bow and a rifle (.22 marlin and .30 M1 Garand) when I
was about 5-6 by my mother and grand mother, I got my first BB rifle at
the same age, by age 10 I was shooting pistols and had my first 12 gauge
shotgun and a .30-30

I'm teaching my kids to shoot now, they're 4 and 6

It's not un-American to not use guns, but it is un-American to not condone gun ownership. As its an American right to bear some arms. Im not a conspiracy nut or anything but i dont want the only people that own guns to be criminals and the government.

i didn't say anything about legislation.  simply because someone doesn't condone gun use, does NOT mean they're supportive of the government taking away guns.  one is capable of both hating guns yet supporting the rights afforded to us in the constitution.

they'll get a bb pistol in a couple of years, after a few years of playing
with it I'll up the ante to letting them shoot a .22 pistol then move on
to the .45 around 10-12... they've been using a bow for a bit now, they
certainly understand the danger of weapons, my son more so than my daughter

I am curious as to why you group gun owners in with religious morons. If anything I own guns to protect myself from people like that.

And actually I don't really own guns for protection as it would be the absolute last resort. I own them for hunting/sport shooting. Children need to know and respect the power of a firearm, simply telling them to stay away from them is dumb and unnecessary - do you run away every time you see a gun?

no i don't run away from a gun, but because i haven't been properly taught, i don't just pick up every gun i see.  yes, they should be treated with respect, which is exactly why i think it's completely legit to teach your child to simply not touch them (unless supervised by an adult).  dumb and unnecessary?  c'mon man, seriously?  dumb to teach your kid not to pick up a gun? 

look, i'm not advocating gun laws or anything.  i'm simply saying it's completely valid for a parent who does not support gun use, to teach his children not to touch them.  when they are of legal age, they can seek out education as they wish.
