hi everyone.
i got some wheat berries the other day thought it would be fun to try.i have been looking for rye but cant find it for some reason.these looked similer.so i searched it and a few people have used it.the recomendation from rr saying to do it the same as rye.
so i have had it soaking for around 24 hours and i dont think it is needind to be simmered cause it smushes in my fingers pretty easy.i dont want it to get mushy and think it will if i simmer it at all. so i want to just load my jars an pc away.
what do you guys think and has anyone used wheat berries before? oh yea there hard winter wheat berries if that matters at all.

Not sure man different grains/seeds absorb moisture at different rates it would seem.
If nobody has advice just do it qualitatively and see if you can get them hydrated to the same sort of point on RR’s videos. If they are soft then I would just give them a test-run!
Test them on the paper etc But I can tell you that when I made whiskey from wheat+barley it hydrated pretty quickly at warm temperatures so maybe it does not need as long as WBS/Rye...
I have taken a hair dryer over-hydrated grains in the past too when time was short lol

Rye is more common in the US, wheat is popular in europe. I use wheat with no problems. You should really weigh your grains before and after soaking to figure out how much water is in their. I don't like vague instructions as peoples grains can vary a lot, I also do not like measuring compressible substances using volumes.
If people bothered to weigh and report these weights etc it would be FAR easier for others to copy their processes.

You know thats a great point about the weight...
I will keep that in mind when I'm playing with some new substrates & grains over the xmas break...

I use wheat berries. I soak and boil for 10 minutes. I Pretty much only boil them to help steam dry. You should be good if you can smush them with your fingers easily.

Two nights ago I did a hard wheat berries run following the rye tek pretty closely and I think it was over done for them. They seemed okay going into the PC, but coming out, they were TOTALLY stuck together, and that was with gypsum in the mix.
I would recommend reducing soak time and either eliminating simmer, or being very gentle and very brief with the simmer to avoid overcooking/bursting/sticking etc.
I went ahead and innoc'd with LC anyway and they are already showing myc growth, but I'm worried they are going to be really slow due to all that goopy glue.
I'm planning on doing another run taking all this into account. Please keep me posted on your technique and results, we should work together and figure out the perfect wheat berry tek and post it.
PM me if you wanna.
Thanks!

How long do you soak? have you had trouble with stickiness after the PC?

I have been experimenting with wheat berry mixes lately actually. I rinse the berries, soak overnight, then simmer for 15-25minutes. I have been combining it with quinoa with good results so far and I have a few jars with wheat berries mixed with wheat germ in the PC now.

I usually soak them about 10 to 15 hours. I follow RR's grain prep video. Have yet to have a problem with grains sticking together.

im down with that. i didnt simmer just soaked for 24 hours then rinsed with hot water. then i poured them on a piece of foil and took napkins to get off the moisture on the outside of the grains. then i loaded my jars there in the pc right now. i did 1 jar without getting the moisture of the grains and pc them already. when i took it out it was way darker then when i put it in. i pced it for 90 minutes. it was not clumped together though.

also if you shake the jars while they are still hot it will help with them not sticking together

OK here is the skinnny on wheat berries bro. This is how to do it. One rinse berries till water is clean. Drain as much water as you can. Have a hot pot of coffee ready cover the berries with the coffee. Then add 4 to 6 cups of water. Add table spoon of gypsum put on the stove bring to a gentle boil and cut the heat cover and let soak between 4 to 24 hrs. At the determand time bring berries to a boil for 10 mins. Put in strainers and steam them off till they pass the toilet paper test. Load and PC It's that simple. Good Luck

I think it can depend on your own particular wheat, that method would leave my grain with far too much water. But soaking just for 24hr like the OP did would not have enough moisture in mine.
This is why I much prefer talking about ml per g added. If you calculated yours after that treatment it might very well be the same moisture content as another person soaking different wheat for just 24hrs.
In post a long time ago RR said he reckoned his grain was 40% moisture, which is one of the lowest formulas I have seen, but I do like it that dry.
