Trouble Measuring the *Correct* Amount of Wheat Berries
    #10403666 -

I found the best substrate/spawn runner on the planet! At least, I think it is at the moment...

I mean, it smells great when I boil it in my kitchen, it has a nice, light-brown color, and it has a nice, plump size.

But I have a problem with wheat berries: unintentional wasting.

Every time I measure-out wheat berries to boil for 1 hour, I always measure too much berries when I half-fill my half-pint jars. This ends up with me having to throw away all those perfectly-good wheat berries in the trash because I have no more room in my PC to fit another jar.

Does anyone here know the correct ratio for wheat berries after they have been cooked and are filled with water?

In other words, anyone here know how much wheat berries expand after simmering them? Is it like 3X the size or something?

Any help to prevent me from wasting Wheat Berries is Appreciated,
~ LogicaL Chaos ~

For rye, I use 1/4 cup dry per jar.
For WBS, two jars dry makes five or six cooked.
So... 1:3, sure. Try it and see.

I had this prob with wbs so I made a grain bag like a mycobag but way more blag. For wbs 1 pint 'correctly filled' fill half way and 3 tbsp

how do you prepare these?

i found some spring wheat berries at my local organic health food store. its literally twenty feet from my house and i cant find any rye locally, so...

i soaked them for 24hrs. simmered for 20mins. PC'd @ 15 psi for 90 mins.

is this a good approach?

how do you prepare your wheat berry jars?

i just infected a quart jar w/ my own print/syringe (EQ). im hoping for some pretty white soon...

the grains are shakeable and not too clumped. after the sterilization the jar seemed a bit dense...

im guessing a wash, then a soak, then a wash, then PC. no simmer. the grains seem a bit mushy. seem to be clumping together a bit too much. not too bad but... it seems like a fine line to get the moisture content just right. i will definitely go on the dryer side next time. i dont think the simmer was required.

any thoughts?
