Re: AA PC worth it? [Re: Citizen13]

I have a Presto 23 quart and I like it. It does what I need for now.

As for the gasket, yes, they do crack with time and improper treatment. However, you can order replacement gaskets online or from a hardware store so you're not completely screwed if that happens. I've seen them for as little as $9.

One thing to mention (and you may already know this) is that once you get your pressure cooker, go to your local county extension office so they can check the gauge and gasket for you. My gauge is off by 3psi so I have to make adjustments when I can/cook things. Google it for your county. It's a quick, free check.

Both are safe, but you can expect to give an AA to your grandchildren in 40 years, with no maintenance costs. They're fucking tanks.

Another thing to consider is the type of stove top you have,,,,,I was at an associates house who had the 921 and it did not comply with the weight limits from the stoves manufacturer,,,,They had one of those flat top electric stoves...

I confess, I don't own an AA. I have a vintage Ball Eclipse c. 1937. This has the same technology as a new AA.  It's all original and has no gasket to replace. It has original gauge...

...original everything.

Pre- WWII folks. The current AA's are built like this:

The same would apply to a Presto.

Hmmm.

Could be. I'd think that would depend highly on what they are loaded with. But if we're talking about dry weight, it must be because of the thick, overbuilt and sturdy construction of the AA pressure cookers.

you're right, i had a brain fart and thought they were steel. however, the AA is a single piece of machined aluminum, whereas the presto is not. (correct me if im wrong)

different strokes for different folks, but a 50 year old AA will hands down be in better condition, stronger, and last longer than a brand new presto. and if you shop around you can get it for the same price. if you want to get a new AA, consider this: the first few times you have to buy replacement parts for a presto will make up the cost difference. and 5 years down the line, you more than likely will end up spending more.

also, if you work with a flow hood, an AA will not suck air back into it when cooling, and will instead create a vacuum that can be released when you are ready. this is impossible to do with a Presto.

its only overkill if you aren't utilizing the advantages an AA offers. if you just dabble, then a presto is more than sufficient.

I think they're both machined aluminum, and I'm NOT suggesting the presto is dangerous. It's just flimsy by comparison and no way by a long shot is it as durable.

That only matters if you open the thing in sterile air anyway. Which I don't. Someday, maybe.

But if you do use a flowhood, then you can leave your PC sealed until you open there.

You make it all possible. Doesn't it feel good?

im not any more of a sales man for AA than you are for a Presto. no need to get so aggresive bro, i think we all can agree AA is a higher quality product than Presto, although the argument can be made that sometimes the advantages of an AA are unneeded depending on what you are trying to do.

Also, taping anything to your "locking plug" sounds pretty dangerous. McGuivering a PC is not recommended IMO.

Things i can do with my AA that you cant do with your Presto:

Never buy any replacement parts

Never worry about my seal being tight (because it always will be)

Never lose my "rocker weight"

Never have to season my gasket

Never worry about dirty air getting sucked into my PC while it's cooling (there are times when this comes in really handy! E.G: G2G)

Never worry about dropping it, and it not sealing correctly anymore

Never worry about it losing its resale value. ( a 50 y/o AA goes for the same as a 1 y/o AA on ebay)

<3 dont be mad that i love my AA.
