PC disaster!!
    #1019157 - 11/03/02 09:12 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Through bad luck or plain ignorance, I have destroyed a brand new pressure cooker.

I added enough water for a cooking time of 60 minutes, and started heating. After the pot has been steaming for 20 minutes the pressure indicator still only registered 5psi. I thought it just needed more time to get to 15psi, so I left it alone.

With the gas turned all the way up.

Big mistake.

The water was boiled off very quickly, in around 30 minutes or so, and the lead weight for the pressure release valve melted off  (I was in the shower when this happened, blissfully unaware - Eejit!). In short, a ruined pressure cooker, and 4 jars of substrate which might also have been wasted.

Let my idiotic mistake be a warning...
NEVER LEAVE A BOILING POT UNATTENDED!!
Especially if it's your first time using a pressure cooker, and you haven't got the hang of it yet...!

So much for beginner's luck... :frown:

Brings back dejavu. One time I fell asleep on the couch, while PC'ing.

An explosion like a f*cking 120 mm cannon went off in the in the kitchen, WAKING my ass up - QUICK.

It was the safety release plug BLOWING OUT of the AA PC after it went over it's pressure limit -- unattended by the snoring raccoon .

But, a new safety plug only cost $5. So, nothing was lost, besides the jars content & a $5 bill.

But, that was a learning lesson & now I use a HD hot plate & a timer to turn the sucker off. So, that shit will never happen -- again.

6T

His didn't explode, it just ran out of water, then the metal got hot enough to melt the plastic. I have never seen one explode, but it happened to a relative of mine before I was born. I heard it wasn't very pretty.

What's an AA PC?

Well, I'm glad my cooker didn't explode. In fact, I count myself lucky to have recovered the jars inside intact. They even look usable.

Damn. I still have no idea why the cooker only reached 5psi. Oh well, I suppose someone has to keep the pressure cooker manufacturers in business...

An AA PC is an All American Pressure Cooker. These are some scary stories. Hope everyone has learned some lessons today, I know I have.

Yeah, but at least if it happened to you, we would have all benefited from one of your famous funny "Moe Stories". I love those, they always seem to be a big hit round these parts.

Scary but cool. You know what I wondered about? What would it be like to bring a PC up to 15 psi, or 20, or whatever, and then drop it off a tall building. I think that might be cool.

Were there directions with it that you didn't adhere to? Kinda curious, since I've been looking into picking one up, and would like to think that they're fine as long as you use tham as instructed.

I was an eejit [Re: TheHobbit]

Yes, there was one vital step I missed in preparation, which was to oil the seal around the rim of the cooker. This meant there wasn't a tight seal between the lid and the pot, leading to 1) too little pressure and 2) too much water boiling off. I also didn't turn down the heat, which I should have. I should have known something was up when the pressure didn't rise above 5psi and stopped it there and then, but I did not.

Also, when using a pc (my pc, anyway, I guess they all follow the same principles, but don't take my word for it), turn the heat all the way up, and when the indicator reaches 15psi, turn it half way down. If the indicator falls, then turn it up slightly, if it is still at 15psi turn it down further. The idea is to use the minimum amount of heat to maintain your desired cooking pressure, so that the water doesn't boil off too quickly.

Anyway. Bought a new PC, nearly ruined it again (but didn't - thank god I stayed to watch it. A painful lesson learned!) because I put too little water in and didn't turn the heat down, but I've sterilised another batch of substrate with it without problems. I hope it worked...

The moral: Always read the manual the whole way through!!

After all this trouble, though, I finally innoculated my first batch today! Mushies for me! Fingers crossed...

surely you can get a new pressure valve for it. or is it useless once the lead goes??

First, I am familiar with the idea of turning the heat on high until you reach pressure then turning down ot maintain. While it takes longer I find going with a lower setting from the beggining may be a better idea to prevent moisture migration in the jars as a reults of excessive heat on the bottoms. Just my way of doing it.
Also, just think about all this talk of making PC's explode. If you do it, you may want more protection than some pillows and a helmet. Im sure the sides of the PC firing off from 15 psi will have enough force to tear through a pllow, or a football helmet, and possibly even the person behind it. I would say set up a camera and get the fuck away. You, like everyone else, will need to see the experience second hand. And if we're having fun here, how about bring a small PC (like a miro with the handle taken off) up to pressure (10psi), putting it inside a larger AA and bringing that up to pressure, then dropping the whole thing off of a building. Expensive but exciting destruction.

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for any particular PC, i.e., brand and size, that's a good deal for the price. I was looking on Ebay, some sound ok, some are very old.

i think mine is a presto or something like that. whatever they sell at wal-mart. i've been using it four going on five years without having to replace any rings, plugs, etc. the only mistake i made was not washing and oiling the rings the first time and it wouldn't build pressure. never happened since.
