Not to sound elitist but if you haven't eaten Tatanka you haven't really eaten meat.

It is NUMMY!

And it is extremely healthy from a fat perspective.  I think it is one of the lowest fatty meats.  Of course to really taste it you have to kill it on the prairie with a lot of ritual and then eat the liver fresh and hot out of the body.

Silly Wasicus, meat is for Natives.

I don't eat meat unless it was a deer shot in the wild by a hunter or a fish caught in a stream by a fisherman.  And when I do eat these animals, I thank Nature for providing them to me so that I might grow stronger and healthier, and I pray that their soul had a quick and relatively painless exodus from the body.

I am a vegetarian because of the way the meat industry works in America.  I used to be vegan because the dairy and egg industry is just as bad, but I came to the decision that I just cannot live without cheese!

Most of the meat and other animal products that we consume in this country have come from animals that have been raised in cruel, inhumane, and unnatural conditions inside of what are called 'factory farms'.  The animals are basically tortured.

They are also fed chemicals and hormones that serve only to make them fatter so that the 'farmer' will get more money.  I am also vegetarian because I do not want to be indirectly ingesting these unnatural and harmful substances, and I do not want to be eating something that has been proven to be a main cause of heart disease and many types of cancer.

Another reason I don't eat meat (except for natural sources) is because the meat industry in our country helps to support world hunger.  The amount of grain that we grow to feed just one cow could feed a lot more people than that cow could.

The meat industry also causes a lot of environmental damage.  The waste produced by factory farms is one of the largest sources of pollution in our country.  Factory farms are also responsible for clearing a lot of forests and ruining wilderness areas, which I think should be preserved.

It is for these reasons that I refuse to eat meat.  It is not simply because by eating meat I am killing animals.  Like I said, I will eat venison if the deer has been shot by a hunter in the woods and eat fish if it has been caught by a fisherman in a stream.  I am also a big supporter of small, local farmers who treat their animals well and kill them in as humane a way as possible.

I have been a vegetarian for over two years now, and I feel like a much better, healthier person for sticking to my beliefs and standing up for principles that I believe in.  I don't understand how people can continue to eat meat after they have learned the things that I have learned about the meat industry.  It just seems completely immoral and inhumane to me.

Argh! I wish I could understand those terms...

I'm 1/8th Cherokee but sadly, my great grandmother passed away before I could benefit from any knowledge from her. :frown: The closest thing to a wise-man around here is the crazy homeless dude who wanders around the gas station...

did you read "where white men fear to tread" by Russell?

As a white man I would be interested in knowing where i "fear to tread". Can you give a quick summary of the book?

On a only slightly related note I "fear to tread" on some of the darker, scarier, woodlined roads in the nearby reservation at night. This is because the roads just look scary, no matter where they were located and because of the unsubstantiated but not unprobable stories of indians (native americans if you want this to be PC) who own automatic weapons and grow large quantities of marijuana on the reservation(while I don't think it's illegal, they may very well want to defend their "crop" and keep its location secret).

The book basically says that nobody is going to get any kind of "freedom" until the "native americans" get what they are due.....but you should read the book. Do you know who he is? He really has walked his talk for the most part. Russ was in all kinds of shit. He does some acting these days- played "hawkeyes" father in "last of the (sp) Mohecans" and was the indian dude that woody harroldson shot in "natural born killers" to name but a few roles he has had. The book is really interesting as it documents the early days of AIM (american indian movement). I know several AIM members and I can tell you they are intense, riteouse brothers who walk thier talk.....

I prefer to use the term "aboriginal peoples" as I was born here just the same as most folks and consider myself native american even though I am of jewish origins...
