does anyone have the right to take anothers life?
    #1829870 - 08/19/03 03:29 PM (14 years, 6 days ago)

is killing for any certain reason ok? what if it was to save your family? would it be ok if killing a certain person would save many lives? does anyone have the right to take anothers life? is taking a human life anymore wrong than taking another kind of life? is the act of killing wrong, or is it the intention that really matters? what about killing by mistake? why is killing so taboo? as a species we killed to eat and killed for survival...

i personally try to avoid taking any kind of life b/c it simply makes me feel bad, but if i had to kill for survival (say i was stranded on an island or something like that) then i wouldnt think twice.

Exactly how I feel. I honestly dont think killing someone in this lifetime will get you punished for the next (if there is one) level of life. I just personally couldnt do it becuase of all the pain it would cause me/others. The typical Killer can do it becuase they think they can justify it, but in reality if you stop and think nothing justifys killing.

Killing in self-defense is justified. Normally, I'm reluctant to so much as swat a fly, but I'd use whatever force was necessary to protect myself and those I care about from someone intending us harm.

Nothing is justified, everything is justified.. reasoning for killing someone is basically subjective, depends on each individual happening, but I don't believe we should have the right to take away our gift of being here and experiencing, just as they shouldn't have the right to act on our right.

Of course, the minute someone does, it fucks everything up..
Peace.

How would you react to someone physically threatening you with death when your only available option is to use deadly force in self-defense?

I would obviously use the deadly force, if there wasn't any way out of it... like I said, that once someone breaks the rule... all hell breaks loose, eh? Ahh... chaos... trying to create order in chaos, messy business, inn'it?

Nothing justifies killing, but nothing proves it wrong either. It is definately one of the negative aspects of our existance, but i do not believe it really matters. Anyone can reproduce, for any reason and to me that is the same as killing, be it for food, fun, or self defense. Remember if your not willing to kill there are others that are, and thus the eternal struggle between our species.

If we can hope to move beyond our 'nature', we must be willing to sacrifice ourselves and loved ones for the individual putting them in jeapordy, and hold the the ideal that one day we may be more than we are today.....having never been in such a situation i cannot say what i'd do...i may one day hope to have the compassion to sacrifice myself, but how could i sacrifice my existance for an ideal?!

Is it not impossible to live without taking life? I mean we must kill to eat and hence survive, we kill animals (cows, deer, chicken, ect) as well as plant life without a second thought. If the topic is restricted to taking another human life then I would have to say that I could NOT take another life. I say this because I do not think my life is worth more then anyone else's life. As such, if the occasion called for me to take a life, I could not because, after that point, I would become the agressor, to me self defense is not a justification for killing.

I hate it when people say "yes, I would kill to defend my family" but that they still think it's immoral and they would feel guilty, since they obviously feel the killing _is_ justified... they just act cause it's PC.

I don't think anyone has the "right" to take another's life, or to forcibly compel anyone to do anything they don't want to do, but under extreme circumstances, sometimes, it must be done. ie: when someone's free will infringes upon that of another. If someone was raping me I wouldn't hesitate to stop them in whatever way required. Same goes if I saw anyone raping anyone else, it's the ultimate plunder of someone's body, spirit, and right to do what they wish with thier own body.

Of course the reaction has to be appropriate to the circumstances. I think that under most cirumstances I'd try to incapacitate someone without killing them, but I accept the fact that I'd be capable of killing if in the moment it was a necessary form of protection (for myself or another.)

What if the situation were such that the taking of the life of an aggressor was necessary to save the life of an innocent other than yourself... your daughter or sister, for example?

You, like many of us, would have a hard time living with yourself after taking a life for any reason, but wouldn't you have an even harder time living with yourself if after inaction, you allowed a life to be taken?

I would.

You have the right to do whatever you want to do on this earth.
So do other people.
After you excersize your right to kill someone else, their friends may practise thier right to mutilate your body and torture you to death.

Morality is what you make of it, I would not kill unless there were more than 1 life in danger, except my own.

If it were me vs someone else, and no one else on thier side or on my side in danger, I would battle it out with them. Some ninja shit would happen.

Wesley: I'll explain, and I'll use small words so that you'll be sure to understand. You warthog-faced-buffoon!
Humperdinck: [insulted] That may be the first time in my life a man has dared insult me.
Wesley: It won't be the last. To the pain means the first thing you lose will be your your feet below the ankles, then your hands at your wrists. Next, your nose.
Humperdinck: Then my tongue, I suppose? I killed you too quickly the last time, a mistake I don't mean to duplicate tonight.
Wesley: I wasn't finished! The next thing you lose will be your left eye followed by your right!
Humperdinck: And then my ears...I understand! Let's get on with it!
Wesley: Wrong! Your ears you keep, and I'll tell you why; so that every shriek of every child at seeing your hideousness is yours to cherish. Every babe that weeps at your approach, every woman that cries out, 'dear god what is that thing!' will echo in your perfect ears. That is what to the pain means. It means I leave you in anguish, wallowing in freakish misery forever.

Killing is a natural part of life. Senseless destruction of life, on the other hand, is obviously bad for any intelligent being that values the phenomenon of life itself. So there is a built-in conflict here. A balance must always be made between killing others in order to live, and killing just because you're angry or afraid, or because you enjoy killing.

I think the social taboo against killing humans comes from the insight that a society with such a taboo is a more pleasant place to live in than a society in which killing other people is okay.
