The mushroom's psilocybin content is highest when the mushroom is young, and the mushroom begins to lose potency once it reaches maturity (ie, veil breaking). The opposite of mj. This is why aborts are potent; they stopped growing when they were young, and will never mature.
Although the mushroom will continue to gain mass after the veil breaks, it will start losing potency. I guess, if you're a shroomer, you'll pick em young for quality, and if you're a drug dealer you'll wait until they're as big as possible. Picking after the veil breaks is necessary for making spore prints, i believe.
I obviously prefer to pick em young, but someone else can probably come up with a reason to let them go a day or two..

The mass continues to grow, but the psilocin and psilocybin content is the exact same. I'd rather eat a 5 gram mushroom than a 12 gram mushroom that has the same amount of psilocin and psilocybin.

According to "The Mushroom Cultivator" by Stamets and Chilton...

"By choosing a healthy, young specimen with the veil intact, and then by carefully removing the veil tissue under aseptic conditions, a nearly pure spore print is obtained. This is the ideal way to start a multispore culture."

So it seems like choosing a cap with the veil still attached would be the cleanest way to go, provided you have a way of removing it properly, say with a flamed scalpel...working in a HEPA cleaned room.

When they are small, the CONCENTRATION of psilocybin and psilocin is highest. After they grow bigger, they still have the same amount of psilocybin and psilocin, but its merely more spread out through the mushroom.

how do you know it quits producing psilocybin. it seems like common knowledge around here but there doesnt seem to be any proof. its a perfect set up for mass misinformation.

Harvest your mushies when you have a significant amount to harvest, both young and mature... if you let a mushroom mature, it will have the same amount of psilocibin as if you ate a young mushroom... the difference in dried weight really doesn't make that much of a difference.

eat 3g of dried aborts, then gauge the trip...  wait a month, eat 3g of dried huge overmature shrooms and find out for youself what happens.  :grin:  Measure accurately, and if you can't tell a difference in potency I wouldn't worry about it.

So why doesnt everyone pick there mushrooms like when there pretty small so they could have more flushes due to less use of the substrate if the potency is the same?

im not arguing that abhorts are more potent. thats totally a different topic. what i want to know is if the mushroom stops producing psilocybin when the veil breaks. maybe it produces less but it still may produce it. if it can still continue to convert non-psychoactive substrate to psychoactive material then thats the whole point of growing them right. and if its a living growing mushroom, its guaranteed psylocybin whereas future mushrooms are not guaranteed.
