TV is addictive. What would society look like if we all would come off the 'entertainment' drug? Switch off the TV and switch on your life!

All the hours we watch TV what do we see? What is rubbish and how much of it is valuable information? What does watching TV do to our perception? Wouldn't it be better if we learned from life first-hand then to be told how we should perceive it?

In short how dangerous a drug is TV really? Are we wasting our time in front of the tube being reality-fed? Never really learning from our experiences and formulating our ever changing perception? Has TV killed the free spirit and mind?

What do you think?

I hate it, and it is definitely addicting (just ask anyone who watches series shows like Lost).

Religion isn't the opiate of the masses anymore. We can sedate the masses with mindless sitcoms; religion is too complicated and takes too much work. So yes, tv has helped to crush the spirit.

I think tv has its place, but like all things moderation is good. A little tv is good for just relaxing, for entertainment, for learning, fill in the blank. To much, and your missing out on other valuable experiences.

These days, I think computers are more of a dangerous drug than the tv, at least for me.

With that you've opened up an entirely new dimension to my question. Is there something missing in our experience of life? Are the things we do enough so that the experience of life is truly fulfiling its purpose?

I think i'll start a new post on that one...

I rarely watch TV, I'm on the internet quite a bit though.

Is replacing one addiction with another good as long as I don't call the current one an addiction?  I might call the internet an addiction again when I go online less and start working out more..

Then working out will become an addiction, but I wont call it that until I find another addiction to replace that with.  and guess what; that addiction wont be called so until I leave it behind for TV again and start the whole cycle over.

TV is like relegion, each channel is a different sect hoping to get enough followers so that it can validate its personal messages/vendettas

Yeah that's well said. Replace one addiction with another... if addiction is defined as
Quote:
to describe an obsession, compulsion, or excessive psychological dependence

then the question becomes can we escape?

TV is how a lot of people unwind after long day of doing things they wish they could forget about. If it wasn't that it would be something else. Just because you get stoned in your free time and society frowns on that why do you find it necessary to call out television?

Tv is programmed. Theres a programmed set of values and belief systems being broadcast and whilst we have the 'choice' of channel, it is still an external force deciding what we view, and in turn what we take away from the experience, shaping the people we are.

I see the internet as being very different as it is not pre-programmed and there is complete choice over what we view. It is more engaging, and requires user input.

i personally dont watch tv anymore.

Yes television is programmed, programmed in the same way a book is,in the same way a website is, in the same way a song is. Simply because certain things express views does not mean it will over take your will.

I would like to think if people submitted less (concentrated their energies more constructively) they would build their lives appropriately, and wouldn't have to forget about their reality.

I haven't watched TV since i was 16. I am not opposed to educational television and even enjoy the blips of morning/nightly news i catch when in the kitchen (im living with my parents again, this year.)

I do believe that Major network entertainment television unfairly sets peoples perceptions of society. Television unfairly portrays society to be far more dangerous/scary than it is and it also defines unrealistic expectations about wealth/money/material things and image.

These 3 things alone, are HUGELY detrimental to the minds of the people in our society, and thus on our society.

I also agree that passive entertainment is more often then not, not enriching a persons innate human abilities.

Tosatori - has the same thoughts as me about the internet being different than TV.

TV is nearly useless. Nearly. :smile2:

I think the passive intake of information is one of the worst aspects of TV culture. Most of us become intellectually lazy after routinely tuning into programs like the evening news. We may come to believe that it's OK to trust what we're told, so long as it's from a 'credible' source. (News ... :scat:)

I watched a lot of TV, growing up; and I think it stunted my personal growth at a tender age. Adolescence should be a time of enthusiasm for life and a thirst for self-improvement. The best part of the week shouldn't be junk food and TGIF. Not for me, at least.

The internet's great, though :smile2:

Eh? People need downtime. I really don't see how watching an episode of the Simpsons is the scourge of society.

People seem inordinately proud of not watching television like they deserve a big pat on the back.

Your simplifying it.

Watching the simpsons isn't the scourage of society, although certainly teaches children that being disobedient trouble maker is "cool" "acceptable" and "normal."

However, when television is constantly bombarding you with subliminal messages that you are not in control, are in adequete and that you need to buy things - its not healthy.

Its a subversive technology and is largely used to control a consumerist society. These days it has gotten way out of hand and has been a strong influence on crushing a decency which society once held.

What happened to reading/gardening/playing outside/bike riding/communicating/hanging out with your pet/etc/etc as downtime.

To each their own. I very much want to live in a world where people are not contaminated by the false values perpetuated by Television and an overly consuming society.

However, you are right, television is innocent enough to an extent, and id hope that any person with an education would not be influenced by the "idea of society" it puts fourth. However, this clearly is not the case...

Do you see how it does influence people consumptive habits and perceptions of material goods? And do you not see that the hyper materialism of America (+ other 1st world nations) is inherently a bad thing?
