I don't have time to watch the video right now, but I'll watch it later.  With that said, schools can kill creativity by focusing on too many left brain activities.  I mean that's pretty much all it is.  Art classes are a joke in most schools.  Our right brains aren't stimulated enough and this causes imbalance.

I'll bet some peoples' left brain is going crazy right now after reading my thoughts.  Analyzing every single word I said, just looking for something wrong with my statement so they can validate themselves and feel right.  Wait for it, wait for it..............

Can't someone exercise their creativity after school?

High teaches a very basic skill set: reading, writing, and arithmetic.  These skills are vital to an individual, regardless of what turns out to be his or her profession.

I do agree that children should be allowed to pursue more creative, less traditional subjects.  However, despite the wonderful story of the success of the choreagrapher of "Cats" and other famous broadway plays, there is a very limited space for artists in society.

While its not entirely representative, I know many professional "artists".  These individuals have attended college to study art (painting sculpture etc.).  Many are not able to support themselves primarily through their artistic endeavors full time, as a career.

I was the kind of person who wanted to explore subjects on my own and make my own discoveries.  In math, if we were covering something that seemed interesting to me, I would spend the entire period deducing my own formulas and writing calculator programs to explore the world of mathematics.  In physics, I was much more interested in trying to figure out the formulas on my own rather than trying to memorize them, and I was really into theoretical physics and trying coming up with my own theories.  School did absolutely nothing to harnest or build my talent as a self learner and discoverer.  If I would have "went with the program" so to say, I fear that I may not have developed these abilities.  I would have become another memorizer learning information that society says we need, without ever questioning it or really trying to understand it ones self.  Every other subject I wouldn't really pay attention, I would either draw, program, discover more mathematical formulas, or think about physics.

School may be good for the majority of people who don't have some of the talents I did, but for people like me, it kind of leaves us in the dust.  School should definitely try to identify the creative types and have special programs designed to expand and harnest our creativity, otherwise we just get frustrated, get bad grades, and might not develope our talents to their fullest.  School is designed to morph us into a certain mold, but not everybody fits that mold, and we shouldn't have to.

For most sciences, including math and physics you learn the basics and then build upon them.  Sciences builds upon its own knowledge.

Despite the majority that claim to do so, its unlikely high school children are going to rewrite the laws of physics.  Few will come up major breakthroughs in theoretical physics.  For the kids that want to explore these things, there are often "math clubs" and "science clubs" etc.

I'm just curious.  For someone who was making new laws about theoretical physics in high school, and coming up with groundbreaking new mathematical equations, where did it all lead?  For someone of extremely highly intelligence, have you now gone on to publish your equations?  Have you put anything to use?

How have you gone on to make use of your talents?

Depends what school...
I went to the literally one of the best highchools in the U.S.A
although I failed
I still learned a lot and
was encouraged by teachers to be myself.
and I'm fucking WEIRD
so that says a lot!

it does depend on the school.  it also depends on the individual teachers.  chances are, if the teacher is a fresh out of college kid teaching in an inner city school and forced by the no child left behind program to simply teach the answers to expected questions from the standardized tests, then yes, there is going to be quite a bit of creative stifling.

but i went to a public high school, while overall rather shitty, still had a couple of really talented teachers who cared about what they were doing.  smithington talks about wanting to know where the formulas came from, rather than just memorize the formulas themselves.  well whenever my ap calculus and algebra 2 teacher (she taught both subjects) introduced a new formula, she would often spend the first half of a lecture, or even a full lecture depending on the complexity, deriving the formula.

it is unfortunate, however, that there are so many sub-par teachers who simply lecture from the texts without bringing in creative elements.

I don't recall saying I was coming up with groundbreaking equations and theories.  I said that rather than trying to memorize all these formulas, I was much more interested in how they really worked and I was driven to come up with most of the formulas on my own.  They weren't new to the world of mathematics, but they were new to me.

You ask where did all this lead to.  Well, right now I am in college, because I am not above school and there is alot I can learn from it, and I would like to get a degree to help put me in a position that I can do research into physics, mathematics, computers, robotics, who knows.  I also use alot of my ingenuity and knowledge in computer programming, it helps me alot in programming the video game I'm working on right now, which I have high hopes for.  Also, I am still very into theoretical physics, and some of the unique approaches to it I investigated in highschool are leading themselves to possibly a new theory, but I don't know where it will end up.  If you are interested in my physics ideas I can try to explain some of them to you.

so you don't agree that reading, writing and arithmetic are basic fundamentals that should be taught to everyone?  seriously?  do you actually believe it's acceptable for people to be illiterate in this day and age?  that's just nonsensical.

and you don't believe that there is comparatively little room for full-time artists in our job market?  you do realize this is a profession where nothing of necessity is produced.  art is a luxury afforded once the basic necessities of life are met - ie food, clothing, shelter, healthcare, etc.  and the unfortunate truth is that those basic necessities are goddamned expensive, and require a solid source of financial funding.

please explain to me how his logic is brainwashed again.  because it seems pretty sound to me.

In general, science progresses in a stepwise manner.  You take one result, or piece of knowledge and expand upon it.

You take whats already known, build a testable hypothesis and take it further.

lol, anything sounds good when the ego changes the meaning, it will make shit up at all costs

some people like to be professors, some people like to be artists, some people like to agrue, some people like to kill

school teaches everyone the same, acts like there is only one right way

while medicating and ostracizing those who don't "do as their told"

i know what time it is bro, you may have loved the way school was

einstien did not...

he must be an idiot, and all his work and progress must be null and void?!?!

just cause he didn't get a formal education??

you should be a teacher bro, and all the brainwashing you are delicately holding onto can flower just like those before you who taught you these crazy ways of thinking

their should be standardized school....... just to a much higher standard

kids should be aloud to dance, make music, make art, and do math and science... why are you so into stifling children?

there is room for every kind of person on this planet, not everyone wants to be a backstreet boy

wake up

By teaching people that there are rules to subjects like art and science, creativity is stifled.  If a new idea is entered into a world of people taught that there is only one way to do things, the idea will be rejected because it doesn't flow with what is already "known".  People cling to what they learn in school as if the subjects taught are taught as they actually are.  In many cases, this is not true, and that fact counteracts creative momentum.

this all expanded from nature. how do you make test tubes without glass? there is no science in this world without faith.
you must believe in something to reasearch and explore

Life. plain and simple. People do what they want. I'm all about that. It's truly the only way to find out who you are.

there is no one book, or one method of living that supercedes them all

there's no language, math system, society, or person, thats "better" than anything else

it's all just different, and we need to stimulate that diversity and creativity

not bottle it in a form most parents can accept

what the fuck are you talking about?  when did i say anything negative towards alternate forms of education?  please, show me.  you did not even address the comment i made to you in any form whatsoever.  did you even read my post?

okay, for one, you can't generalize "schools" as being totally ineffective and stifling.  there are many, many, many different fucking degrees of capability found throughout the schools of america.  there are poor, understaffed public schools and wealthy public schools.  there are private schools, charter schools, magnet schools.  i am a proponent of effective schools.  hell, i'm a proponent of effective education, be it in school or not.

i simply questioned you when you said you disagreed with badchad 100%, given that his facts and logic was sound.  please answer the questions i posed to you in my post that you quoted, rather than prattling on with your head up your ass.
