I wanted to try tyvek for a change.  I know you can get it from mail evelopes; and i even heard painters coveralls.  Well; i couldnt find cover alls; but i did find shoe covers!  Looking at them tho they seem real thin; and they say "Polypropelene" which im assuming is NOT tyvek.  Right?

Go to Lowes/Home Depot/Walmart... mosey on over to the Paint section... you WILL find a tyvek suit. It will run you about 8 bucks.

Cut it up to fit your jars. use a double layer.

Oh, and if by some weird instance you cannot find it at any of them stores, pack your shit and move out of the sticks... or just look on ebay, you'll find it online.

Most coveralls are not tyvek and I doubt that the shoe cover are either.

I would just get some free envelopes at the local post office and call it a day.

I just bought mine at lowes yesterday, I know they have the Tyvek suit... it says right on the bag it is packaged in "TYVEK SUIT"

For a single layer Tyvek filter you want to use material from the suits, sleeves, or kite material(RR's advice there).  The Tyvek envelopes are thinner tyvek and are most often, as far as i can tell, used in conjunction with a second layer of tyvek, or on top of a jar lid hole stuffed with poly-fill.  That isn't to say that some people don't use a single layer effectively.

I used the thinner Tyvek on top of a Tyvek stuffed lid for my first few projects, because I learned bulk projects first from Doc34 (who is a TC no longer an active member here) and his WBS-Tek, but I really think that having a single layer of good Tyvek (I use the sleeves) is better.  And, while i use rye berries now, changing my lid and filter setup along with continuously perfecting my grain prep (i.e. moisture content) is what was needed to bring down the colonization times of my jars.  ~P~

Im mostly lookin into this cause its reuseable =)  Im on a pretty consistant basis of starting grains for continual harvest; and it just filling poly lids.  Im tired of it.  I could also order the filters and such; but idk... damn.  I guess i should just do that.  But then i'd have to order stupid plastic jar seals cause NO BODY CARRIES THEM!!!  It was a struggle just finding replacements for my rusted lids...

I bought a pack of 8x10 Tyvek envelopes at Staples. 50 envelopes for $30. Seems expensive but one envelope cuts up into exactly 12 filters. Thats 600 quart jars you can filter if you use only one layer (which I do).

$30 IS real expensive!  Considering i can filter that many just pickin up free envelopes.  Thats like someone who pays for coffee grinds.  Starbucks now has em nicely packaged for you ready to go!

I think i just need to buck up and order filters... and spawn bags.  Jars are starting to suck...

What do you advise with regard to fine-tuning rye berry moisture content? I'm working with rye berries right now.

Also curious about your filter setup. Would be happy to hear any info you care to share.

I use coffee filters for the filter along with polyfil, I put the coffee filters on first, then the lid. Also there's a inoc hole, and a gas exchange hole, filled with polyfil.

The best filters for mycology are synthetic filter disks.  They outperform tyvek and everything else.  They can be reused thousands of times.  I have some ten year old ones, and they're still working great.

That totally is worth the money for em then. I like the needle filters idea; but damn those be pricey buggers.  The Disks are kind of expensive too... but the whole no extra work; plus now being quoted as "Best Myco Filters"... time to pick me up some...

What do you advise with regard to fine-tuning rye berry moisture content? I'm working with rye berries right now.

Regarding the rye berries, I just recommend practicing RR's organic rye-berry tek (requires gypsum).  You may need a slightly shorter or longer boiling time (I think I do less than 10 minutes because my stove takes forever to get the water up to a boil).  Also, when it comes to draining/drying the grains after the boil, it is extremely helpful to have multiple colanders to drain/shake your grains in.  I shake the colander every few minutes, multiple times, to get the rye "dry to the touch" as it says in RR's writeup on it.  Don't use one huge colander, or two colanders filled to the brim, use multiple colanders filled with room to shake, or a screen to let your grain steam/dry.

As said, synthetic filter discs are the best route, reusable, but you don't inject your needle through them to inoculate jars, you open the lid for a few quick seconds for g2g, agar wedge, MS inoculant.  My lids have four holes drilled around the edge.  The drill bits used are 1/4 and/or 7/64 general purpose drill bits. There is probably a better purpose drill bit for metal lids, but that's what iam using.  A smoothly drilled hole will rust much slower than one that is punched through the lid.  This same lid would be fine with filter discs as well.

I place a single layer of sleeve tyvek on top of the drilled lid.  If Iam going to do a multispore project than after the jar is filled and the filter put on, I shine a flash-light in the side of the jar so the holes on top glow and I can mark one hole with a marker.  After I inoculate through that spot one piece of micropore tape serves as a patch. ~P~

I put a flat garbage bag on the table and dump the strained rye on that. Spread it in a flat, even layer and it's dry in 5 minutes. Trying to dry it in colanders was driving me crazy.

Aww weak!  So these wouldnt be good for me then.  My plan was two holes, RVT hole for inocing; and a hole oppisite that for breathing.  But puting a disk over it wouldnt work.  Cause then ether i mash threw the filter with needle (just told not to) or cut a small hole for the needle over the RVT seal, but then theres a nice gap between the filter, and the lid; and a hole (cut for the RVT) that would allow contams in.  Guess im to picky, just gotta stick to poly or may be switchin to bags if i ever get to ordering some...
