PROBLEMS w/ Tyvek Filters

Hey,
I've been trying to get some WBS Quart jars going by using a filter and poking holes in the lid.
The problem is that when i put it in the incubation chamber (Tub-in-Tub), there apears to be water loss because my tub starts filling with H20 vapor and condensates.
I'm thinking about scraping the whole tyvek idea, and just start taping the holes. I never had probelms with taped holes on the lids, but this damn Tyvek seems to be presenting many a problem.
The jars aren't growing, and i think it might be becasue of the water loss.
Any IDEAS??
Thanks,

Since tyvek works for just about everybody that uses it I'm gonna have to say the prob is on your end. My guess, either to big a hole or to many holes.

Tyvek is designed to be a barrier to water if applied correctly. That is why they use it on the mailing envelopes and as a moisture barrier in the construction of homes. The trick is to apply it the right way. Just make sure to orient it on the jar the same way it is on the envelope. Just make sure that the outside of the envelope tyvek is facing the substrate when you prepare the jars and no moisture should escape.

Tyvek is a barrier to water, but not a barrier to water vapor.

So many new growers try to use tyvek or even synthetic filter disks without using the metal lid on the inside. This does two things. . .
Either the filter gets wet, allowing bacteria to coloinze right through it to the grain below, or. . .
The rye, wbs, corn, etc., dries out.
Do it like shown in Magash's picture, and it will work.

Anno, I stand corrected, you are absolutely correct about the water vapor passing through tyvek. Man I hate being wrong, but at least it doesnt happen too often! Ha!Ha!
Thanks for setting me straight! MYKEY
