Amanita muscaria var. formosa? And One Other
    #11101329 -

I found both of these guys while hiking in a mixed woods park (mostly pine, beech, maple and oak). I'm pretty sure the first is an amanita muscaria, but I'm not at all sure about the second.

Mushroom #1

And the same mushroom when it was a baby...

Habitat: Northeast US, mixed woods. This was growing on the side of a hiking trail in rocky soil under a pine.

Gills: White, free

Stem: 2cm X 11cm, white, solid, thick and wider at the base.

Cap: 12cm across, yellow with white flakes

Spore print color: White

Mushroom #2

Habitat: Northeast US, mixed woods.

Gills: White

Stem: 1cm X 11cm, light brown at base, white towards the top with white rings, solid

Cap: 8cm across, brown and knobbed, convex

Spore print color: White

Yup looks like muscaria. Your second one is Xerula furfuracea.

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.

Thanks, Bob. I was thinking the second one was Buttery Collybia, but the spore color didn't match. You're right on the money with Xerula furfuracea. There's so much to learn...
