RGS jars stalled, will adding sterile water help?

hey there - have some rye grass seed jars that I've inoculated with ATL#7 LC.  The myc is colonizing the bottom of the jar and then stopped.  The grass seed in the upper part of the jar seems very dry (light colored and easy to shake). 



If I inject sterile water (PC'd) into the jar (maybe 30-40CCs) would that help?  Am I asking for trouble?

Have you given them a shake yet? I'd try that first.

You could inject some sterile water, but 30-40 cc's seems like a lot to me. I'd try something more conservative like 5-10 cc's.

i did shake some...and I ended up with a jar with a couple balls of myc floating in middle of the grass seed.  They didn't really recolonize.

sounds more like a gas exchange issue, what is your filter in your lid like.

no added water.  thats not a cake.

1/4 inch hole drilled in lid covered by micropore tape.  Really?  Water won't help it colonize?

yea this sounds like a gas exchange problem. you sure it is the right tape? seen allot of people get that wrong

yep...for sure its 3M micropore tape.  Is it a problem if you double it up?

your moisture is inside the grain where its supposed to be. 

well, gas exchange doesnt seem to be the issue.  although micropore is good 4 GE its not hepa rated so contams (bacteria)are more than likely the prob if your myc stopped colonizing.  can u smell anything funky besides the mushroom smell?

2 layers of tape not so good for gas exchange. However, if ge was the problem I think it would have colonized a little further before it stalled.

What makes you think the problem is dryness exactly?  How did you prepare the grains?

I'm guessing those are quarts?

I could be wrong, I thought micropore tape didn't breath as well as tyvek.

it doesnt.

synthetic filter disks are hepa rated and the way to go as far gas exchange and microbial filtration and they last forever:thumbup:


If you prepped your RGS correctly then just give it more time.:stoned:

Next time you make you jars i would suggest using tyvek as a filter disk. You can get tyvek at the post office for free.

synthetic filter disks are hepa rated and the way to go as far gas exchange and microbial filtration and they last forever. (www.sporeworks.com synthetic filter disks) there is nothing better:sun:

tyvek/polyfill works if you dont already have contam issues.
