I built one of those alien incubators and innoculated 12 jars with TC strain exactly 3 weeks ago. THe first week was amazing: spore germination in 2 days, and 50% colonization in a week. Now its been a week with the jars 98% or more colonized, but there are these little spots of uncolonized substrate and the mycelllium does not look like its growing over these. It has been a week now with no signs of growth over these little spots. Could this possibly be contamination???The spots do not look like they are colonized by anything, but im guessing it could be bacteria. It is happenening in the bottom of the jar, and a little on the sides. I have tried turning the jars over, but got no results.
Could someone give me a diagnosis??? THankyou
BTW This is my first post =)

Turn your jars upside down to let some co2 out. maybe you added to little/to much water to your substrate?
In either case, if you wait for it, they will colonize... maybe it's concentrating more on colonizing the inside? maybe? yes no?

Hey. This happens all the time to me. It pisses me off and will go away, when the mycelium continues to push forward. I turn my jars upside down (lid down) and slightly hit the jar with my palm to slide the cake down off the glass a little. Just wait and they will finish. I know how you feel, it sucks to wait 1.5-3 weeks for 95% colonization and then end up waiting another 2 weeks for that 5% to colonize.

That recently just happened with me while I was using some pint size jars. They only had like the bottom of the jar left to colonize and they werent doing anything. After about 5 days of waiting, I removed the foil from the top of the jar and also removed all the tape that was covering the holes and left the jar upside down. Now 4 days later they finally finished the jar, so maby this could work for you also.

You can take them out of the jars at 95% colonized. I've taken them out at maybe 90% and they do fine. Just watch for anything bad in the uncolonized area. dilute peroxide for anything that may turn up.
