Words and their affects on the experience of other people.
    #10940794 -

Words can be used either perfectly and imperfectly, there is no in between. For example, LOVE - AMORE, in an overgeneralized sense, are both words to symbolize an emotion. Love is a specific sense is a word that has a rich meaning behind it, in most communications between people and especially on this forum. In order to agree or disagree, discuss and uncover why this words symbolism is meaningful to each other(Meaningful is used as a symbol to represent a positive direction towards a goal.)  we would have to ensure complete identical meanings between you and the other, in order to say that you are not compatible with that person and that you trully do not like them.

Reasoning: Words as representations of an object that impacts our lives in some identifiable and unified sense. However, words in communication are always contextualized. Contextualization refers to the mental act of focusing an object(words meaning) under a specific individual or set of questions. Ie. The emotion love, contextualized in the question "What does is make you do", changes the meaning of love and in a conversation about it, the way you experience another person.

Words in the context of contextualization must be then ensured to exist in identical symbolism, because words, when contextualized become highly reactive or volaitle. Ie. If I use the word 'love' to symbolize the object of experience that is 'an emotion that leads to actions that are premeditated by love itself' of which the other person is responsible for making me feel and if the other symbolizes 'love' as 'an emotion that leads to actions that are premeditated by love itself' that our compatability with another person, makes him feel, although seemingly a similar symbolism, makes massive differences in the contextualization process. To prove, this, employ of contexts, hypothetically, to the two meanings of the words love. I will use the context, 'what should we do when we no longer feel love?"

After performing this mental experiment, it became obvious to me that when arguments ensue ensuring identical symbolism is being used is highly necessary, because all arguments and the highly important communicative component of human interaction(whether you like and do not like another person, whether you know you are compatible with them or not) are inherently contextualization of a individual or set of words that is intending on understandings.

There will always be the generational gap or the language gap or the educational gap between demographics.

Perfection is a subjective judgement that can only be obtained within the demographic one has influence over.

Often I see conversation I am unable to join because of these gaps but that's ok by me; I suppose it's good to have self-sustainable groups in case there's a war or some other catastrophe.

I consider myself to be very pronounced and well educated. Paradoxically, at one point in my life, I Was hanging out with a couple of criminals and drug dealers during a non-employment stint.

I was sitting in a caddy out front this dudes house one night with my friend. All three of us were passin around a tightrolled swisha. Dude had just got back from moving some weight and was trying to de-stress, and was rappin about what had gone on that day. Talkin bout he's always got hurt feelins about puttin his shit on the line cuz of his baby girl and his daughter.

He turns around to me, sitting in the back seat, knowing I'm silent most of the time, and says "What do you thank?"

I said "Shit man, I dunno..."

He replied, "Tell me what YOU thank, You ain't no dummy!"

My first inclination was to simply say "If the risks are foreseen, committing to the action is committing to the risks as well"....

But, I thought for a moment and said..

"You always gotta know up front if the Juice is worth the Squeeze"...

HE said
"See, that's what I'm talkin'. Bout. That's the kind of shit I need to be recognizin right now"

I can agree, presently, with differences in education and generations, it would be near impossible to show the real difficulty behind our communication presently.

Understanding of communication, is inherently lost in our culture. For example, from an early age I was taught that someone is always at fault when there is a miscommunication of symbolism that make a word useful. Many arguments are started and re-heated due to 'what you said', which is really just a nonidentical meaning behind what the person believed they were transferring over to the other person, of which becomes another useless source of argumentation; you cannot disagree about word usage, you can only unify your minds mental construct under it.

If ever I begin to get angry over words, its due anger, however, if placed towards the other person becomes useless and destructive, as the only way solve it is through attempting to unify each others mental constructs under a 'word symbology' and not by competing with them about which is the correct word to use.

One of the most funniest things that I have realized about words, is that because I knew little of the nonidentical meaning behind the words we use and because I knew nothing about how you can agree/disagree with someone arbitrarily(having no relation to the subject being communicated) I must have befriended and made enemies of others, simply out of coincidence, especially because I based alot of what I thought about the person on their beliefs/intentions, things that are inherently understood through communication. Intentions and actions are understood through communication largley because interpretations to actions and especially their motives are not always apparent during the time that you observe the act/intent and therefore must be communicated.

Oh Im not sure what the last part was trying to contextualize, the self-sustainable group part?

Interesting, I usually realize the gaps in communication, by the times its to late and I am already invested emotionally into those conversations. Its by then that I usually have to suffer because of it, now less than ever.

Ironically, the word I used was effective to communicating the meaning I was intending on conveying.

:box:

The only reason that you think its a tid-bid I imagine is because you justify language based on the extent to its common usage.

I justify language to the extent that it is useful. Even if that means justifying it based on common usage because god doesnt care if you have self-love, self respect or integrity, because nothing cannot care.

I've heard this point before, and for some reason I feel threatend by it, as if it's an attempt of domination that can only lead to the abandonment of my gods in favor of yours.

yup..

Quote:
Creation seems to come out of imperfection. It seems to come out of a striving and a frustration. And this is where I think language came from. I mean, it came from our desire to transcend our isolation and have some sort of connection with one another. And it had to be easy when it was just simple survival. Like, you know, "water." We came up with a sound for that. Or "Saber-toothed tiger right behind you." We came up with a sound for that. But when it gets really interesting, I think, is when we use that same system of symbols to communicate all the abstract and intangible things that we're experiencing. What is, like, frustration? Or what is anger or love? When I say "love," the sound comes out of my mouth and it hits the other person's ear, travels through this Byzantine conduit in their brain, you know, through their memories of love or lack of love, and they register what I'm saying and they say yes, they understand. But how do I know they understand? Because words are inert. They're just symbols. They're dead, you know? And so much of our experience is intangible. So much of what we perceive cannot be expressed. It's unspeakable. And yet, you know, when we communicate with one another, and we feel that we've connected, and we think that we're understood, I think we have a feeling of almost spiritual communion. And that feeling might be transient, but I think it's what we live for.

It seems like we did not understand each other. I meant to explain that your perception of language is not as useful, because it limits it to expectations, when communication is about unification. Expectations breed competition and unification breeds tolerance and patiences and better relationships.

Booby,

I see your sense and understand it. We feel threatened when ideas we have held show no more promise. It presents a sense of vulnerability, especially to aspects of our life that threaten us, without it.

The way you speak seems to provide some other form of communication and implicit ideas that I am not so sure about, but interested in.

Ie. When you say, 'I have to abandon my gods for yours?'
What does gods, mean? And why did you choose to use that word, without explaining it; what makes you think I knew what it symbolizes?

In the second post, I am not sure where this stays contstant in the current context about words.

The problem with 'fixing' the meaning behind words is that words are what we fix over the unfixable.

We have a habit of trying to pin down a fluid, transient reality with the seeming solidity and permanence of symbols.  What's more difficult to see is that the symbols themselves, along with all else, are not solid or permanent at all.

To try and fix unique symbols to every possible context of experience would be a literally endless task.  I feel it's easier to treat words as what they are -- conventions which should not be given too much weight or be taken too seriously.

That is the irony, when we miscommunicate we only have words to solves our problems. In a retrospective reconstruction that is not nessecarily true. We are not limited to using words to communicate. We could also point to objects, with our finger. Ie. If you were standing beside me and I was talking about grass in the context of it being used in a composting solution and I used the word, blue-grass to signify the best type of grass for a compost solution, even if you could not conceptualize of 'blue grass', I could potentially spot it out on a field and literally point you to it, for your own observation.

The last part of your post is contradictory. If you believe words are unique symbols of objects, then what you said would be unquestionably impossible to understand. How do I know that the symbol, 'symbol' for example, doesnt refer to banana? The whole reasoning behind words and their use, comes from the very idea that you can use them perfectly, without doubt of potential uncertainties in the interpretative process of communication.

Another problem with your way of perceiving words is that when you say, given to much weight or taken to seriously, it would be impossible to trully gather any meaning from and use from. Rather, it would be much more useful and meaningful(as a measurement of whether it brings you towards your goals) to specify locations in the communication process where taking time to ensure a unified form of symbolize is what each person communicating is utilizing. Ie. With people, I usually take time to clarify(given that the person understand communication similairly) and ensure a unified symbology in our words, when we begin to communicate in the context of what our; intentions are towards each other, our emotions are towards each other, our ethics are for the things that are important to each other and the problems and benefits of having a relationship with each other. The reason being that these parts of the communication process are crucial elements to how a person experiences what you give them, because as a concept of what you are 'giving' completely depends on what is interpreted as 'given' by the receiver.

This form of communication takes control of any damages that occur from muscommunication and it extends our capacity to influence our relationships in a wholesome way, with a higher sense of stability(less emotional rolercoasters that are useless and painful)

Ever since I have employed this method with my girlfriend, we have not argued and gotten bitter towards each other. Nor were we presented what occured before, a deep sense of disapointment that occured because we did not communicate in a unified symbology. We also never have arguments about what we said or did not say. Mostly because we understand that words cannot be argued over, because words are merly sensory encrytions that act as a way to describe not as actual representations of reality.

All words are agreements.  The only reason that the word 'symbol' to you doesn't refer to a banana is because you agree that it doesn't.  But when you get into more vague or internal processes, like emotions, it becomes much more difficult to know whether or not there is really an agreement, no matter how thorough of a description one might give in words.  It becomes increasingly unknowable as to whether words are being used or interpreted 'imperfectly'.  Even in the realm of 'physical objects' (which is really undivided from the realm of emotions) like bananas, as you pointed out, there may be disagreements.  I would assert that there will always be potential uncertainties exactly for that reason.  I would also assert that these uncertainties don't render language completely useless, though they should remind us not to take it too seriously.

To illustrate what I'm trying to convey by a convention that is given too much weight, take money for an example.  As a symbol it seems 'fixed', so it provides a sense of security.  But it's still only a symbol of wealth and not wealth itself; true wealth lies in things that are perishable -- food that may spoil, water that may dry up, relationships with the other people and with the environment that are fragile.  When our symbols for wealth are confused with true wealth, things become unbalanced.  Our actions are no longer measured by their true and immediate worth, instead they are measured by the convention we've put in place to symbolize worth.  For instance: trees, so numerous that they were agreed upon as a commodity, were deemed by some to have a specific 'worth' in relation to our convention of money.  Now our disappearing forests continue to be cut down by people who know only their worth in the dollars and cents, when a tree's real worth is (thankfully) not restricted to this single interpretation.

It's the same with words. In one context, your words may be agreed upon.  In another context, they may be disagreed upon.  The problem with putting too much weight on words is that the context is never fixed, is continuously changing, so the possibility for reinterpretation is constant and unavoidable.  This is why I said that to try and arbitrarily 'fix' some symbolism to every contextual possibility would be endless and futile.  But when we regard words merely as the conventions that they are, knowing that they are in every circumstance potentially 'imperfect', they become less restrictive to a single interpretation.  It's when we take words too seriously hold them too strictly to a single 'unified' meaning that the misinterpretations (which are unavoidable due to the flux of context) become volatile and destructive.

I agree to a certain extent; certain objects are much more difficult to know you are acheiving a perfect interpretation. You used the example of emotions and although in  minor set of emotions, they are pretty simply to symbolize.

One strategy I have is to reduce emotions to potential outcomes(intentions/thoughts) and make this context, the basis to what the word that the emotion symbolizes. Ie. I am feeling an emotion that makes me want to go away from you. Instead I am feeling jealous, shameful, embarrased, fearful. This is a better approach that I usually take with my girlfriend especially, because emotions are a very important part of her life, something she is very lucky to have, considering that she is way more emotionally healthy than I am. I just been taught to repress them, which sux, hardcore, because emotions are harmless when you let them be and intellectualize their use. Its when we repress them that they stay at bay for a short while and eventually go out of our control, in ways that almost always regret and would have wished we otherwise would have done.

In another example that shows the limitations of words, it when trying to communicate, how an emotion you have, makes you feel a certain way, thereafter feeling it. Ie. I feel afraid and that makes me feel ashamed, would be more difficult to symbolize correctly, however, if you reduce it to intention/thoughts, they are very easy to understand and with an open outlook on emotions and their ethical contexts, they can actually be changed smoother.

This is but one way to communicate the more illusive objects that influence our lives and relationships. I am sure we can find better ways and would be glad to hear them.

Emotions are the most complex and affectionate objects that we are presented with, in relationships, especially.  Any ways to ensure that we do not argue arbitrarily, would be beneficial, because their difficult to symbolize effectively in words. One of the tools I have works well enough, but there are times, in reflection, where arbitrary agreements occured on this behalf.
