Psilocybe cyanescens patch - on the inside
    #10868331 -

Greetings all!

Benny the Beaver has this big cyanescens patch. He inoculated spring 2008, using a 7.5 liter patch to inoculate a 100 liter patch of beech wood chips.

Our busy beaver was disappointed to not see a harvest in the autumn of 2008 but had figured that that was all in the game.

Today, August 2009, Benny scooped up a liter of substrate from his patch to later this day aid in a friend's mulching of the garden of his new house :naughty: A small pilot patch is planned utilizing 5 kg beech chips.

As the substate was gathered a very satisfactory mushroom smell wafted up. Definitely Ps.Cy. odor!

But :frown:

It turns out only 1/4 or so of the chips are white with mycelium. The rest is black with moisture, and the substrate has a potting soil/mushroom smell to it.

Does this necessarily mean there will be no harvest this year yet again for Benny, or might there still be one? The substrate (coarse beech chips) isnt moldy and best described as 3/4 chips with soil microorganisms and 1/4 completely colonized chips. Chips were taken from the center of the patch as to not disrupt the edges, where mushrooms are anticipated. The bed is unusually deep (20-25cm = 8-10 in) to maximize substrate production per sqf of garden space.

The patch was primarily intended as a breeding ground for spawn, as Benny the Beaver figured his very small garden would look better with a mulch cover to be rid of the chore of picking weeds.

Let those in the know comment on it!

It really depends on where you live. Ps. cyancescens is usually found in coastal areas, and you need a cool, wet climate for an extended period of time to get it to fruit.

such as our beautiful oregon rain fall, later fall, winter, later winter, spring mainly.  so wet the mush are everwhere sometimes. im no longer a mckenna fan (in small ammounts for me now), but i believe he said "oregon and western washington" in one of his last interviews he said were forgiving mushroom ecologies or something like that, he said something like that

I would certainly wait for a second opinion because this is not my neck of the woods, but I wonder if stirring your substrate, mixing colonized w/ uncolonized wood, would help w/ next year's harvest, at least if this year's proves itself bunk.

I am interested to hear/see what happens.

Good luck.

I have gown Psiloocybe cyanecens  before. Only Pan Cyans.  What do you mean that some of the wood chips were black with moisture?

I wish I knew a beaver that loaded wood chips with cyan mycelium, mine didn't turn out last year either...

Its almost guaranteed to be a moisture problem. When he takes a noncolonized wood chip and squeezes, fluid comes out. Benny the beaver's patch is too wet, i think he should use ventilation holes.
