How can one ignore the human condition?

Yay, once again you outwitted a creature with the processing power of a broken '70s Atari computer.

I am proud to call you friend.

To me this sums up a lot of the human condition...

How could you not see the humor in the fact that a hyper conscious monkey that grew from the sludge and dirt can now reflect back on itself and its own existence and be so curious about being at large that it is sent in circles of attempts to interpret what the hell is going on? Find a hobby monkey!

If they score the right human they can have a blast. The don't worry about survival issues or competing with each other for survival so they can play with each other and all they have to do for that is become our slaves. It's a deal they seem willing to make.

I don't know.. in a way I think we SHOULD be trying to leave the animal/the monkey behind. I kind of see that as why we've, in the past especially, been so violent and so territorial.

You see human beings are a very peculiar animal. In a way we have one foot in the animal realm and the other on the ladder to godhead.

It's hard to see this given we were born into this culture and this life the way it is now, but you have to look at it from a certain perspective.

In the very BEGINNING of things there was NOTHING. Just nature. And us.

The studying of DNA tells us that the cradle of humanity is in Africa.

It's quite amazing that from that one particular point earth.. we didn't even possess a form of language. We would just stay in packs and our entire lives were simply moving to find food and surviving. We had nothing. Maybe stone carvings. That's it.

From THAT to everything we have now. Our needs fully met. Technology. The sciences. Art. It's a miracle that monkeys who had nothing but nature - the rocks, the trees, all of that - to being able to do everything we are capable of today. The fact that I'm even able to type and you, across the world, can view my words instantly.

We're slowly developing the ability to become very god-like creatures. It took a long march over history to get here but the fact that technology and the internet is here is a very hopeful thing. So I think we should try to advance the human species as much as possible. Through neural engineering, through nanotechnology, through quantum physics, through encoding our DNA, through understanding the brain, through creating artificial drugs with computers that will do anything we choose, through all of this and more we can truly shape our own destiny and create a human paradise. That's a very un-animal like thing, and it might be against nature, but we might have to leave that behind for bigger and better things.

This is human hubris. Everything we have developed is and emergent quality of the evolutionary process and not special in nature. No god needed thank you.

I'm using god as a metaphor for creating our own destiny and shaping our own future.

I also find it hard to believe that, as strange as we are, it's just a natural evolutionary process. There had to of been a *spark* somewhere.

And furthermore I'm talking about human potentiality here. Our potential is the REAL realm of humanness, that's who we are, fully and complete.
The potential that humans have, if they could just get their act together, is absolutely INCREDIBLE, and definitely not hubris/overly prideful.

You find it hard to believe exactly because of hubris. Not to mention unconscious death anxiety. (Read the all about it in Becker's book on the hero myth)

One can only speculate about potential. We may not have the potential you claim. We may be stuck being (emotionally at least) just what we are and have been in our known past. More hubris IMO.

Hmm.. I don't know. I try to look at humanity as one collective "entity" almost and I try not to look at history or myself in the narrow slice of time that I just happen to be born into. I do see things getting better, especially in the social arena, which is where human potentiality really strives.

And I think we can do more than speculate about potential. We're dissecting every aspect of what a human is. Once we get a complete understanding of the brain, of the body, of what makes us, us, than we'll be able to reshape it.

And that's exactly what could get us, as you say, un-stuck from our emotions. If we could redesign (either nanotechnologically, pharmacologically or whatever) and re-wire the brain, re-wire ourselves on a mass scale then there will be no frontiers that we can't conquer. This is very hard to do, obviously, but it's not impossible.. therefore it is a potential.

And technology is leading the way already.. I mean it's in the beginning stages, but we're getting more and more connected up on a global scale. Pretty soon we just may be able to hook our brains up to computers and start to do the things that I'm saying. Technology is going to lead us to places we can't even imagine today.

Maybe not in our lifetimes, but who cares. It's the collective human journey that matters most, not ours.

Your question seems like "hubris" more than anything to me. The human condition is a commune between nature and ourselves(human race)
