Good people
    #10837706 -

I was curious about what you think.. Do they exist?

If yes, then what does it take to be a good person?

If not, then why not?
Is there such thing as a good person?
You may choose only one

I say no because I do not believe in good or bad at all.

Interesting. What does it mean for you to not believe in good or bad at all?

Do you mean just in reference to people or in reference to all things? Do you not use the adjective "good" to describe things?

Sorry for the machine-gun succession of questions, I'm just wondering about how far your perspective goes for you.

Good = Love, compassion, lending a helping hand.

Bad = Hate and lies.

This whole idea of no good or bad is really outstretched. What you consider good one might consider bad, but that most likely would be opinionated by certain thoughts.

Yes there is good and yes there is bad. It's pretty easy to understand, trying to say there isn't by breaking the "ego" is somewhat wrong in my eyes. I don't see why you'd even want to break the ego when in fact you need it intact to be who you are.

Peace,
Droz

It's funny that some people think it's so easy. Maybe if they would spend more time trying to understand why and how some things happen, they won't rush into judging so superficially.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

Droz, Is there a time where someone might love, show compassion, and lend a helping hand but still not be a good person?

TYL3R, If you're a good person, then what does it take for others to also be good people?

So what time have you spent trying to understand why and how Droz came to his conclusions before making your judgments here?

Relatively yes. Good people IMO, are basically less neurotic then the average. They know and admit to their imperfections and limitations and choose not to blame others for them. They are open about being afraid yet have the courage to challenge those fears when possible. They look to love and good will as a benchmark knowing they will never be perfect and accepting that. They seek inner joy rather than material wealth or control knowing full well they are temporary and cannot stave off impermanence with power over others or the environment. They are basically rational hedonists and like to love and cuddle and have lots of good passionate relationships and passionate non guilt ridden sex.

There is good reason to believe that anyone who does not believe in good and bad are simply trying to avoid feeling responsible for their bad ways.

Yes you would think that. Which IMO puts you right there with the normal religious, fear driven, cowards.

Someone who does good deeds out of the kindness of their heart, never thinking about the possible rewards or benefits from doing the deed, just doing it.

What's that called,a selfless deed?

No such person exists. We always benefit, if only emotionally from our "selfless" deeds. If you did not think these deeds were "good" and made you feel good you would never consider them.

Nice response Icelander.

Zen buddy, you might be right for some people but I think it is also possible for some people to just not cognitively process "good" and "bad", in other words they might not associate any meaning to those words. But that said, those words are fairly prominent pieces in language games. That's why I asked ArcanePerception about the scope in which he didn't believe in good and bad, because I'm sure that he probably uses the words.  But, yours is an interesting perspective, thanks..:thumbup:

I was waiting for this.

I remember reading something,it might have been some intro book on Buddhism and they said the same.

Is that a main thought in Buddhism, that you can never do a completely selfless deed?

It might be. It's a main premise in rational emotive therapy which has many similarities with Buddhism.

What about people who spontaneously act to help another person without time for fore-thought but with real possibility of mortal danger to themselves? Perhaps this sort of behaviour could be based on a conditioned response that had been earlier shaped by positive reinforcement (i.e. good emotions), but does that really matter or reduce the selflessness of the deed at the time they're risking their life with no guarantee they'll pull through?

It does reduce the selflessness. To give ones life for another one must feel that it is a "good" or "right" act and therefore be in accord with ones ethics. Following ones personal ethics gives one a feeling of rightness, goodness and personal satisfaction for one reason or another.

Again there is no selfless act. We always act in our own best interests first and formost whether it benefits others or not. This is our nature.
