Good people
    #10837706 -

I was curious about what you think.. Do they exist?

If yes, then what does it take to be a good person?

If not, then why not?
Is there such thing as a good person?
You may choose only one

Interesting. What does it mean for you to not believe in good or bad at all?

Do you mean just in reference to people or in reference to all things? Do you not use the adjective "good" to describe things?

Sorry for the machine-gun succession of questions, I'm just wondering about how far your perspective goes for you.

Good = Love, compassion, lending a helping hand.

Bad = Hate and lies.

This whole idea of no good or bad is really outstretched. What you consider good one might consider bad, but that most likely would be opinionated by certain thoughts.

Yes there is good and yes there is bad. It's pretty easy to understand, trying to say there isn't by breaking the "ego" is somewhat wrong in my eyes. I don't see why you'd even want to break the ego when in fact you need it intact to be who you are.

Droz

It's funny that some people think it's so easy. Maybe if they would spend more time trying to understand why and how some things happen, they won't rush into judging so superficially.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

Droz, Is there a time where someone might love, show compassion, and lend a helping hand but still not be a good person?

TYL3R, If you're a good person, then what does it take for others to also be good people?

Relatively yes. Good people IMO, are basically less neurotic then the average. They know and admit to their imperfections and limitations and choose not to blame others for them. They are open about being afraid yet have the courage to challenge those fears when possible. They look to love and good will as a benchmark knowing they will never be perfect and accepting that. They seek inner joy rather than material wealth or control knowing full well they are temporary and cannot stave off impermanence with power over others or the environment. They are basically rational hedonists and like to love and cuddle and have lots of good passionate relationships and passionate non guilt ridden sex.

Nice response Icelander.

Zen buddy, you might be right for some people but I think it is also possible for some people to just not cognitively process "good" and "bad", in other words they might not associate any meaning to those words. But that said, those words are fairly prominent pieces in language games. That's why I asked ArcanePerception about the scope in which he didn't believe in good and bad, because I'm sure that he probably uses the words.  But, yours is an interesting perspective, thanks..:thumbup:

I was waiting for this.

I remember reading something,it might have been some intro book on Buddhism and they said the same.

Is that a main thought in Buddhism, that you can never do a completely selfless deed?

What about people who spontaneously act to help another person without time for fore-thought but with real possibility of mortal danger to themselves? Perhaps this sort of behaviour could be based on a conditioned response that had been earlier shaped by positive reinforcement (i.e. good emotions), but does that really matter or reduce the selflessness of the deed at the time they're risking their life with no guarantee they'll pull through?

It does reduce the selflessness. To give ones life for another one must feel that it is a "good" or "right" act and therefore be in accord with ones ethics. Following ones personal ethics gives one a feeling of rightness, goodness and personal satisfaction for one reason or another.

Again there is no selfless act. We always act in our own best interests first and formost whether it benefits others or not. This is our nature.

I'm not sure but I think that's what one strives towards in Buddhism which I suppose goes hand in hand with enlightenment.

The thought of doing a good deed should never enter your mind and if it does, your not there yet.

You should be living good,it should never be a conscious thought. Something along that train of thought anyway.

How can one know what one should do, since the thought exists only in the unconscious? Knowing happens in the presence of consciousness.

Do you mean reduce the selfishness? ...to give one's life for another.

Why do you think one must feel that it is a "good" or "right" act to give their life for another?

Is it conceivable for someone in such a situation not to have that feeling before acting or is it presupposed that people feel (on some level) that what they are doing is a "good" or "right" act (at least to them)?

You quoted Droz and then said "It's funny that some people think it's so easy. Maybe if they would spend more time trying to understand why and how some things happen, they won't rush into judging so superficially."

The two observations a) that some people think it's so easy; and b) that they have rushed into making a superficial judgment due to not spending enough time trying to understand why and how things happen, both seem like judgments you had made, were they not?

What made it seem like your words were in reference to Droz was that you said them after quoting Droz directly. If your words were not in reference to Droz, then why else did you quote him?

So my question was simply to ask how much time you spent in order to arrive at your judgments (as stated above), because it seemed that you were not spending enough time trying to understand why and how Droz said what he said before rushing in to judge so superficially..

What made you think that I didn't take enough time to think about the meaning of Droz's post?

The reason why I said that it isn't that simple is because everything has a deeper explanation, and the reasons why lies and hate exist are very complex. Hate for example is merely a defense mechanism, people that hate do it because they think this hate will somehow protect them from dangers. It is a reaction based in fear and lack of understanding that there are more efficient and healthy ways in which one can protect themselves against the things that threaten their physical of mental integrity. Taking this to consideration, would you say that lack of understanding is bad? If yes, then I'd only have to assume that you might think that mentally retarded people are pure evil because they can't comprehend even a larger part of reality.
I am also curious if Droz (and you too if you share his opinions) thinks that labeling someone as being bad because they hate actually helps the situation or produces a change within the persons who hate.
Another thing I am curious about is how many people who share Droz's beliefs would lie about their drug usage, and if they would have the idea they've done something bad.

All of these and much more is making me think that Droz didn't take enough time to think before jumping to conclusions.

Now regarding me making judgments about Droz's personal nature, you couldn't be more wrong. Just because I have the ability to form an opinion about his actions and ideas, it doesn't mean that I am making an appreciation regarding his personality, since these two things hardly have anything to do with each other. If I were to judge his character as a result of his posts, I'd do the same logic fallacy that he did in his post.

Well I didn't straight off, hence why I asked you how long you spent in order to get to your judgments. As it seemed like you were using 'length of time' of 'trying to understand why and how' as a criteria to judge whether someone was jumping to conclusions or not. I wondered whether you were applying the same criteria to your own actions, because you didn't ask Droz to clarify what he meant, what his deeper explanation was, and nor did you try to find out how long he spent or even the depth to which he went to arrive at what he said. So, I could only think that you too didn't spend much time or go to much depth in trying to understand where he was coming from before you said what you said. But now it has been since clarified..

With regard to "bad" qualities of people or "bad" people, I purposefully tried to avoid this topic except with regard to what people said in their posts. I think it's a false dichotomy, "good" vs. "bad", but it is interesting that many people seem to often think that way. Semantically the two concepts may be very close to one another I guess. But the reason why I think it's a false dichotomy is because I don't see it as quite so black and white... it's all grey from where I'm sitting. That said, I do believe in good and bad, but am also aware of my fallibility in making those judgments when I make them.. my 'truth' criteria while making them is largely based on pragmatics, the raw emotion I felt at the time and then loosely supported by rationale which I have a tendency to think twice about and change my mind about the whole thing later. Not exactly cognitively efficient ...but now I'm going on a bit too much...

Yah, I think that case is not so difficult all in all.
The more the range of compassion widens, the more 'good' a person could be called. Indeed, everyone thinks that he does good for oneself in the first place, and that's where this notion and definition of 'good' stems from. Experienced personal well being.
Those, who harm ones well-being, are called 'bad'.
Now, the range of compassion first widened to the family, and then towards societies of different kinds.
At the time, everyone would care about the whole planet, then we could call humans as 'good' at least.
Maybe this was a little bit compressed, but hopefully understandable

I agree with the above thoughts on this, and and would remind you of the role that fear plays as well. When heavily attached to a loved one, offspring or partner, the fear of losing them seems to play a large subconcious part in such rash actions, and might seem scarier than one's own fears of death.

Acting out of one's fears of suffering is not altruistic, their is personal benefit. This does not make these acts any less good than previously stated, though due to the nature of attachment & suffering one is also -conciously or not- protecting themself from their own loss as well as the other's.

good point.

All actions come with personal benefit. Good or evil there is always something in it for us, otherwise we wouldn't do it.

The best of actions would be the ones where everyone involved see an equal benefit. The worst of actions would be the ones where one or a few people see a benefit while others suffer.

Obviously this is not black and white. There are many variations between good and bad.

sorry I am late to the party. anyway I meant in reference to people. Events or actions can be good or bad from a single persons perspective. If an event or action serves your best interests it could be defined as good and vise versa. Still a event or action may be bad for you and good for others so universally good and bad do not exist. The only possible exception I see to this is the complete destruction of the universe which would be bad for all.

Yes I do use the words good and bad but their meaning is completely subjective to me. Mostly in reference to my likes and dislikes.

No one is perfect though, it's impossible with our reality but we are capable of being both by the choices we make.

I dont see how love and compassion would move us forward. For the most part it has been the opposite side of the fence that has advanced us the most. War = technological advancement, famine and plague = stronger gene pool, subjugation = focused use of resources ect...

I want to make a point of commenting when we agree on something.

I may not be good but I am handsome!

Actually good is not a good word choice here. Skillful, or emotionally  healthy would be better.

When I was 8 years old, a Sunday-school teacher taught us that when someone asks how you are, you never reply "good" because you're not, only God is good..

I voted yes, but only because as a bad person I assume the other end of the duality must exist... right?

I think this brings up an interesting point. It may be the duality of our minds and not necessarily social conditioning that tells people to label others good and bad. It could be a self preservation technique good = helpful, bad = dangerous

Every person no matter how good their intentions are. acts from self fulfillment. my opinion.

example: a guy trying to save the rain forest may seem like a selfless act. But always does it for his own personal boost of ego.

exceptions do apply..probably.. but not in the western world.

To be fair good is a subjective concept.

Indeed, and no more concrete than the nature of sucking.

I don't know, he claimed to be the only son of God and that's a pretty bad move as far as I'm concerned. Just as equally bad of a move would be his timing, living in a time when the history of his words could so easily be manipulated and confused. If he was as high a power as so many believe, he should've known better. I guess he can't be blamed for the foolishness of the ones who follow him (or the misrepresentation or misinterpretations of him), or can he?
