did my jars go bad?
    #10807016 -

I just started to put together my first tray. i have 12 jars of completely colonized rye berries that i had sit in the fridge all last week due to vacation trip.. I could not put the trays together this past sunday like i wanted to i was too tired...

So last night i made 6 quart jars of jiffy mix that was pastuerized and let cool over night until now. I took the 12 jars of colonized rye out of the fridge monday to let them come to room temp. Last night i checked them they looked great had them sit in a normal room temp. I noticed alittle water due to the cold to warm climate change for them.

Well, i opened the first jar and it smells like fresh mushies. but as i was getting the rye out of the jar i noticed as i crumbled the berries up that some of the rye was kinda bluish in tint i think. not sure if i bruised it but am wondering if i waited to long and there no good? wondering before i make the other trays up.. anyone know?

Sounds like bruising. That's not a problem whatsoever.

I say you stop worrying and get those blue motherfuckers into your fruiting chamber!

Bruising happens sometimes when a cake is dehydrated. Also happens when they are....ummm... bruised.

If the smell is mush then do not rush.                (or worry)

:goodluck:

Anytime you see blue you should automatically think of bruising.  I'm not saying this will ALWAYS be the case, but most of the time, it is.  And we all know that bruising doesn't hurt anything.  Just don't go beating the living shit out of your mycelium and you'll be okay!

It's the green ya gotta watch out for!

kay just wanted to make sure... if there dehydrated what should i do about that? should i mist once i put the casing layer on top? cause i just cased my first tray. or is putting the rye first and wait for that to colonize then add the casing layer ? which is the way to go?

do you mean put the rye into the trays and then submerge them for 12-24 hours?

No. I deleted that post because I was thinking about dunking cakes.

I think you may be able to dunk casings as well though, check it out on the search engine. Just type in dunking a casing

Are you using the rye to spawn to bulk?  If so, it won't really matter if the spawn is a little dehydrated as your bulk should contain enough moisture.  It could even make the mycelium spread out faster since they'll be thirsty and looking for water, but don't quote me on that just yet.

Regardless, you should be fine.

If you're just casing the rye by itself, you won't be able to dunk the crumbled rye berries. Since you already cased the tray, just make sure the casing material is at full moisture capacity.  Give the mycelium a day or two or three to break through the casing layer, and introduce it to fruiting conditions.
After the first flush, the rye will be re-consolidated and you can dunk it then.

Thank all of you guys for responding in my time of need lol. i just finished making 3 good size trays.... i used 3 -4 quart jars per tray and about a 1/2 inch of casing each tray. then i misted the casing layer, along with sealing the tray with cling wrap. I had 14 jars not 12 like i thought. but one of the jars had a spot on it actually two spots that were looking like grains of dirt were there. i saw this before and no its not a good thing so i am gonna let it sit for a bit to see if it grows lol.
