TEMP DROP
    #10792666 -

Radiantthought said: "How are you accomplishing this? Common wisdom anymore says that keeping things in the mid to lower 70's is the best practice for the entire process. I only ask because if you're using an incubator you're probably gonna get whipped for it around here."

It's nothing special I just have them in my room with a heater on 80 that turns off when 80 is achieved and comes back when the temp drops. No incubator is used the door always stays shut so the temp stays at that temp all the time. I have read many different things about temperature I just thought that 80 sounded right for me and it has worked out well so far.

What about temperature drop then?  Are you talking about from colonizing to fruiting?

I have always incubated my jars and have yet to see any documentation saying the previous statements written by Paul Stamet have been retracted.

Yes when it's 100% and after the week set and I birth and move to the FC is a 10 degree drop ok, or should I keep at 80

Fruiting should be mid to low 70s.

So yes, drop the temp, add lighting, increase humidity and FAE.

But 80 is ok for incubation because I hear alot of people saying that is bad for it?

I have actually read that a temperature drop from fully colonized to fruiting is a minor pinning trigger, but I could be wrong.

I would keep it closer to 77F but I bet it doesn't matter.  Do remember that the myc, when colonizing, are metabolizing, so they do emit there own heat.

Has there been an estimate of how much heat it would emit? I'm sure there is not a exact answer but maybe a guesstimate

3-5 F?

80F is fine for colonizing jars, but if you're using large spawn bags or large bulk trays, I'd keep it a bit cooler.  Mycelium in up to quart/liter jars will produce about 3F to 5F temp rise, and the large spawn bags I use produce ten or more degrees of internal heat.  You need to take that into consideration when determining what ambient you want to run at.  Commercial spawn labs keep their 'incubation' rooms at 69F to account for the extra heat inside the filter patch bags.  By the way, Stamets never said to use 86F as an ambient air temp for colonizing P cubensis.

You can fruit at any temp up to about 90F, but the fruits will be denser and have more weight if you'll try to keep it cooler. 75F is probably about perfect for fruiting, but don't sweat it.

Thanks RR that will help alot, I inoculated my jars going on 4 days ago and I have growth in all 5 I did, I needed to know that badly in case I would harm the myc by having it too hot. Thanks again

One more thing, if the temp is lower say 75 when fruiting then the humidity would be lower right? If that's right then do I just make up for it with increased misting?

RR,

Is temperature change (drop) a pinning trigger when entering the fruiting phase from the colonizing phase?

Not with P cubensis.  You can get just as good a pinset by colonizing at 75F and fruiting at 80F as the other way around.  Believe me, I've done thousands of grows all over the temperature scale.  Temp drop is not a pinning trigger with tropical species.

Ok.  That makes sense.  It's the same idea behind cold shocking.  Cold shocking serves no purpose for tropical species.

Mist as required to keep your substrate from drying out.  Adjust humidity according to your analog hygrometer readings.  Why do you suspect humidity would be lower with a lower temp?  A 20F drop in temperature will double the relative humidity, not lower it.

I just figured heat would create condensation which would cause it to have more humidity, I'm pretty dumb tho ha ha
