Psylocyber I got the idea after opening my humidor and taking out a fresh cigar, I believe that a porus top layer wicking the mosture off is the very nature of a sponge and yes I think that I will use a man made sponge.

hey, i just thought of something. perlite is just volcanic glass ground up... so why not use a big slab of pummice? that would sure be easy to clean up. wouldn't this be essentially the same thing as perlite?

One solution to the 'perlite is messy' complaint is to simply move the perlite to a dedicated chamber and use an air pump to move the humidifed air to the grow chamber.Rippers air pump and half-pint jar full of perlite with water in it seems to work quite well, is small, allows for unattended air exchange, and is not messy.

Code, that is one viable solution but I think that I should have outlined my idea. I would like to have individual semi-portible chambers that are easy to move easy to spray clean and easy to store when not in use. That is why I had every thing in one easy chamber that just needs to be pluged into the wall and doesn't have airlines runing from one chamber to another.

I thought of a idea, mabey if you could put the perlite in some kind of bag/container the could allow the humidity to escape but hold the perlite in place. these contianers/bags could be removed for rewetting or to dry out and store without a big mess. Any ideas on what to use. Mabey put your perlite in a tupperware this fits in the bottom of your grow chamber so you can remove it easily or add water. What do you think?[This message has been edited by Humidity (edited April 03, 2000).]

I've built the setup I explained in this thread this afternoon. I don't think it was a loss of time since it seems to work fine. I used a tupperware about 8" by 6", and some 2" deep. I filled it with perlite, leaving only about half an inch at the top for the exhaust hose. The perlite covers a 6" air stone. I have to admit it took a few hours (pump seems a bit weak), but the terrarium went to 92% humidity, then I turned the pump off to see how fast it decreases. Strangely, there was no condensation at all, but I know from experience that my humidity gauge is reliable. With this setup, both the perlite and the tupperware remain outside the terrarium, leaving all the space for the cakes or casing, unlike in Ripper's tek. You don't even have to open the grow chamber for maintenance, which keeps out contams. Hope this is useful to someone... [This message has been edited by Aldous (edited April 03, 2000).]

You people are missing the point. I am trying to make an alternitive to perlite not a new place to put it or a new way to use it. I should also say that I plan on putting my air hose underneath my saturated bottom sponge.
