cacti seedling experiments, lots of pictures

got busy this year with the cacti seeds. I experimented with lots of different lighting schemes, although I can't recommend everyone try the things I did because I live where the weather is very moderate, you might burn your seedlings up. Anyways...

These two containers were Trichocereus bridgesii, and a couple lw seeds mixed in together. I used the same exact soil (1 part potting soil: 1 part coarse sand) for each. The only difference between the two was one of them I took outside each day at 12 pm and put it in full sun for about an hour. You can see the one that got that added full sun the cacti are much shorter, fatter, and healthier in my opinion.

on the right is the one that got full sun for an hour, on the left is the one that didn't move from the window.







heres a close up of the slightly etiolated ones that didn't get the full sun. See if you can spot the lw in the mix. :cool:











this one got the same exact lighting, except for the hour in unadultered sun outside. Notice how much fatter and healthier they look. They also have much more developed root system then the other one. Again see if you can spot the willamsis, much harder when they all are short and fat. Although you can tell them apart because the Trichocereus have a split at the end.











These bridgesii were started outside, they got full unadulterated sun for a couple hours, and then shade for a couple hours. They were a little amber sun burned in the beginning, but now they are looking very healthy. In my opinion its much easier to nurse sun burned seedlings then it is to nurse etiolated seedlings.







These are their counter-parts, grown in a sunny window, etiolated and falling over, not so healthy compared to the others. See the one growing from the perlite on the side of the pot? :whack:





This is full blown mix of seeds. There are bridgesii, peruvian torch, and lw seeds in this one. Same soil mix, but this one gets as much full unadulterated sun as my adult cacti. Giving it more shade now that its getting up there because of summer. Notice the sun burning.

lw started about 2 months ago in a window. They've been out in the open without humidity bag for about a month now. Hardening right up.

my worm bin, they aren't to happy about summer being so hot, but they'll survive. I use shredded newspaper, dead leaves and potting soil for bedding. I feed them kitchen scraps and fresh yard waste.

Very nice :smile:  There's no substitution for experimenting on your own to see what will work in your environment.  I've had hard times with seedlings because I have so many plants and have moved several times, but now I seem to have some seedlings doing great in my grow tent.  Those 2 month loph seedlings look very happy :smile:
