Do you agree with Eckharte Tolle's assertion that one need not understand their mind?
    #10375999 -

Part of the Power of Now goes something like this:

Q: I feel that there is a great deal I must learn about my mind before I transcend personal suffering.

A: No, you don't need to. Once you understand the fundamental dysfunction, you can reclaim consciousness from the mind, thus eliminating unconscious suffering.

i.e. You are not like me, therefore something is wrong with YOU.

I don't buy it. Sorry.

No. :shake:

I don't think it's even possible to truly understand one's own mind.

What do we know of our minds other than the basic understanding of our motives? And when speaking of the mind, are we talking about the ID, the Ego or SuperEgo?

I think we understand pretty well how the mind is capable of learning associations, and how to manipulate that.

Useful, granted, but only a modest percentage of the mind's total capabilities.

YES

If you see that any movement away is only going to eventually lead back to yourself, then why trade with the mind

Remian as you are in your natural effortless being

Be Still

If you want to flex your intellectual muscle thats another thing...but then you wont be serious about transcending suffering or the absolute truth, then your still caught in the minds egoic display, nothing wrong with that

Some read Power of Now because they genuinly want to wake up, some just want somehting to talk about with their friends, they can keep their cappucino consciousness, i like to meet ones who want the whole truth & nothing but the truth

:peace:

So the mind is indefatigably capable of many things, yet incapable of fully truly understanding itself? Why? :strokebeard2:

Can a model ever fully represent itself?

Do you know what your next thought is going to be?

An automobile is made out of steel, fiberglass, and petroleum by-products; it is not a sentient being and therefore cannot consciously understand anything.

I don't see why it couldn't be able to, at least abstractly.

Maybe sometimes I know what I might think next, and sometimes I don't. Basically, you're positing that since the mind is infinite, it is impossible for anyone to fully understand it, right?

Not at all.  I'm saying that using the mind to understand itself is like using a flawed mirror to examine the blemishes on the mirror--it's unclear whether this is even possible.  I used the situation of sometimes not knowing what you're going to think of next as a clear example of some aspects of the mind that are presently (and perhaps permanently) beyond our own reach.

Well, a mirror cannot examine itself, but a human can.

I think that it's not probable that the mind can fully understand itself, but it's definitely possible.

It may not be important to understand 100% though. If the leverage points of our psychology make up 1% of the totality, and we can understand them, it seems to me that that would be helpful.

Understanding it completely, though, is obviously more helpful than understanding only 1% of it.

" i like to meet ones who want the whole truth & nothing but the truth"

Its hard when you have interpersonal relationships, its hard to trade no suffering for some suffering and love.

Perhaps that's why we associate Age and Wisdom, When men are too old to care and no longer have anything left to lose, maybe trading everyting for enlightenment is an easier choice.
