A Possible Way To Help Get Get Rid Of Misinformation?
    #10226144 -

Lately when telling newer members about the search function, I'll suggest that they keep their search within a couple years, click the TC box, and just start typing in subjects.

This yields a ton of respected information from the forum members who has been designated that role.  Yet can be overwhelming for someone trying to get a summary of what he needs to do exactly, and why.

Also, the current mushroom cultivation part of the site houses a lot of out-dated information.  Some teks harbor some good information, but also have some bad stuff at the same time which is confusing newer members and they have to continually post in the forums regarding conflicting information.

What if we designated certain members that could post in a Trusted Cultivation section?  Moderators would choose these people, inform them that a new site section is being made, and ask that they submit their most recent techniques and considerations.  These teks or considerations would have to be approved by moderators or TC, or a TC like position before being shown in this section.

Now, anyone can submit teks or information to the regular part of the site, and these would remain subject to ratings by any member... but only chosen ones would be highlighted in the Trusted Cultivation section.

Would this be too much effort to implement?  Could someone try and point out some fallacies in this idea?

That a good idea but it sounds like basically what we were trying to accomplish with the Cultivation Archive. Only high quality posts get moved there after manual review by a staff member. Or did you have something else in mind?

I think the cultivation archive definitely helps, but it is lacking a front that the main page of the site displays.  When a new user or guest approaches the site, for someone who doesn't know anything their first instinct is to browse the mushroom cultivation section.  Then, being armed with some knowledge and some misinformation as well, they register on the forums and post their plans, and also post that they're not sure what to do due to conflicting information.

Then they finally get directed to or find the archive.  Maybe a more seamless way to display teks and information that has been refined into a single document, like those displayed in the mushroom cultivation section?  Cause even with the posts in the archive, users have to go through the whole thread, and sift through those words.

Its hard for me to describe this idea... I'm sure I'll find better words for it the more I focus on it...

Almost like a wikipedia page approach to describing the entire process of cultivation.  It doesn't explain the numbers, and volumes, amounts to add... its almost a description of the teks being currently used today, and it then links to those teks that are in that "approved" circle of techniques listed.  You click the link, and it brings you that refined tek, which has been condensed down into a single text file format, which could then list related threads like those found in the forums.  The main page could also reflect the general opinion of certain teks listed on it.

Currently the mushroom cultivation section displays files in folders like:

Grow Guides
Fruiting Chambers
Agar
Grains

Which then opens up another folder, displaying more folders, or a list of files.  This forces the user to go through all the folders and all the files without any real direction other than public ratings.  There isn't much of a general experienced consensus telling the person what to do.

Maybe we could make this more seemless by having a single page that would look like this:

1. Introduction To Mushroom Cultivation
2. Basic Understanding Of The Mycelium Life Cycle
3. Sterile Procedure
4. Making a Spore Syringe
5. inoculation

Each one of the sections would link to the paragraph outlining the process, for example you click "Making A Spore Syringe" and it sends you to the part of the whole outline which is on the same page as the above titles.

3. Sterile Procedure

blah blah blah blah  glove-box or flow-hood blah blah blah using alcohol wipes blah blah blah blah blah being clean is important blah blah here is an example of good sterile technique in front of a flow hood: username's name of tek.  Blah blah blah this entire paragraph would be full of sentences explaining and considering options and different techniques.  Many such past techniques have been disregarded and are not believed to be valid forums of procedure such as the oven tek, Rush Wayne's Peroxide tek, etc.  There are many sanitizers and cleaning products used for various purposes, some of the most used include alcohol, lysol, etc.

____

Obviously I just threw that together but do you sort of see what I mean?

The section outlines what is involved with sterile procedure, and links to teks and/or more in depth explanations of that part of cultivation.  It also reflects the general opinion of those designated members.  If there is a general agreement among the TC's that the oven tek is bull, this should reflect that so new growers understand that the experienced growers don't do it.  Also if a new technique has been suggested and is being tested, it should be mentioned.  This main page would constantly be changed, it can't be static.  I think the static mentality of archiving information is what is actually retaining the misinformation found on the boards.

Does that kind of make more sense?  I wish I was more apt to explaining this design interface... I can visualize it quite well, but how you'd code it and implement is hard for me to describe.

I understand that taking a lot of effort to change or improve the site needs some sort of incentive, yeah it will make it easier for new users to learn cultivation... but where does it make sense as a web-site?

If you make a single page with a plethora of information linked off of it, which is always changing and always up to date... this would be a huge resource for cultivators, and trying to make this resource easier to use would draw more attention.  It would also give you power to plug in vendor suggestions, possibly improve the usefulness of this site as an advertisement conduit for sponsors.

I'm just throwing ideas out there, whether they are valid, or even worthwhile, you'd know.  So, take it as you will.  I'd be willing to help with such a project if we can put some heads together and figure it out though.

The trouble I have found with the cultivation archive is that it is threads in there, not specific posts. Sometimes one must browse through the whole thread to find the relevant post. I think shroomzey laid out some good ideas there! The cultivation archive also lacks a section on printing, syringe making, and drying. A "Tek index" is desperately needed!

In addition to Shroomzey's ideas, I think there should also be an updated FAQ page. Basically, anything that users feel the need to post "UTFSE" to should be there.
examples: How long until I see growth? What strain should I start out with? What temperature should I use? Etc.
