When Attempting to Clone a Mushroom:

Is it best to pick the shroom during the first flush, or one from the last flush?

The plan is to put the piece into a jar of grain, and use it for grain to grain transfers.

Anybody have an opinion?  Or better yet, anybody know for sure?

pretty sure you just pick/clone the one you want the genetic, any flush

I say choose the biggest mushroom you can find from any one of the flushes,
or the fastest growing one, both good traits

i know it's best to pick a big guy, but will it make a difference if it's one of the first to develop in a flush?  I'm just curious if grow speed is also genetic, or if it's just size.

the biggest and fastest growing are good if you want a whole tub of those traits, since your just replicating the same genetic line over and over again. if you want weak slow growing shrooms clone a smaller weaker slower growing shroom and get a whole tub of those.............clear as mud?

are some people stronger than others, or taller, mature faster? same principle, breeder use the smartest biggest dogs, fastest horses.........on and on, blah blah blah..........i'd say wait for the 11th flush:P

all those characteristics are traits of a genome.......copy the genetic code over and over you get the same traits.......

so to clone:
i cut a piece from inside the shroom i want to clone, put it in a jar of sterile rye berries, and wait for 30%, shake...etc...?
Is that all there is to it or is it more complicated?
sry if this is a hijack, but i thought it fits the title :smile:

So if you clone a mushroom from a third, fourth , fifth... flush would you expect to get a bunch for from
flush #5 if you cloned a mushroom from flush #5? would this be a way to increase later flush yields?

cloning is eugenics (selective breeding) so you clone 1 shroom, and let the myc grow then fruit it and most fruits will be like the one you cloned...some bigger some smaller...then you clone the best one of those...etc...
i just need clarification on the procedure!

ummm, the mushroom doesnt know what flush, its only following IT'S genetic code..now if you clone the biggest fastest growing, then ya you'll probably get more of a yield.....however genetics do not bypass environmental conditions, like if you take a football player, 225 all muscle, right, but dont feed or water him...his genes can do nada for that.


maybe a class in microbiology? or even bio 1

You also have to take into account that a cloned shroom is not a true isolate. There will still be variations from fruit to fruit in the clone batch.

take a syringe and stab it through the stem, like when someone gets their tongue pierced a sliver will come out in the needle of the syringe, then inject that into a lc. in preparing a lc you have tons of options, 4%honey. karo, yadda yadda........the lc will give you more to work with than just one jar, but ya i'm pretty sure the original method you mentioned would work

take the shroom you want, break it in half long wise

take a scalpel, scrape some of the center of the mushroom stem off.

put it on agar, let it grow, transfer some of that growth to a slant if you want slants, transfer some to grain.

I'd stick with first or second flushes.

What if you just happen to pick a(sub)species that actually took 3 or 4 weeks to  fruit (for it's 1st flush).

i hafta agree with that.  i made up a nice batch of lc with that tek and noc'd up a couple jars of wbs with it, left it for 2 days.  checked on it, and it was COMPLETELY green.  and yes, i practiced sterile procedures.

How did the LC look?

I have 4 different jars of LC, done exactly like this. They look good I guess... fluffy white clouds floating in clear liquid... but now you got me worried!

That's the problem with LC:s, you never know what the mycelium in them is. Mold or mushroom? No way to tell.

It's a lot smarter to use agar and make myc water straight from the plates.
