Need computer help!!!

My sony vaio vgn-c190g laptop started acting up yesterday; it freezes every time after I start it up after about 3-5 min.

This all started after I went one to one of those south park episode streaming sites. I didn't click on any ads or download anything.

I've tried:
--doing a system restore (i was able to restore my comp to an earlier date, but it still freezes as usual)
--using vaio system recovery to wipe my C drive (this has worked in the past, but won't work at all now. if i choose to do a C drive wipe from the vaio recovery menu, my computer just restarts and i'm back where i started.)

Any suggestions?

OK so first you did a system restore and it didnt work. That leads me to believe it's either hardware or malware. a system restore wont get rid of malware.

you also essentially formatted your drive. I assume you dropped an image onto your computer which basically is like you pulling it right out of the box after you bought it. You said this didn't work either. If it was malware, this would fix it for sure. So it's most likely a hardware issue.

First though, restart into safe mode, most likely tapping F8 will get you there when you restart your computer. It varies sometimes from manuf. to manuf. - restart in safe mode and see if it still freezes up after awhile. Then report back here w/ the results.

I would say download a memory test program but you say you cant have it on for more than 3-5 minutes. If you can restart in safe w/o a problem then its possible we can get you to download some things to test with. But we can deal with that after we know if you can boot into safe mode w/o a problem.


edit: oh wait, my fault. you couldnt drop an image down. Sorry i missed that little bit. Still try safe mode.

Besides the freezing, are you noticing any popups or anything else? Maybe programs telling you that you are infected or something?

I'm in safe mode now and it seems to be working just fine.

I haven't noticed any pop-ups or anything like that on my computer.

What now?

OK - download Hijack This and install it to a real directory. Not a temporary directory. Something like C:\HijackThis or something like that.

Run the program, and have it scan and save a log. Then post that log here. Then, don't listen to what anybody else here says besides me, or Gumby, or someone else who knows what they are talking about. Fucking with shit w/ this program can cause lots of problems if you dont do the right things.

So yeah, paste your log here.

This isn't your problem, but if you don't know what trymedia.com is then put a check mark next to

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.trymedia.com (HKLM)

and click fix checked. That wouldn't be your problem though. And you can sit in safe mode for a long time w/o it freezing?

OK, I deleted the trymedia.com thing.

So far my computer is running fine in safe mode. No freezing or slow processing.

lol other people can help. nobody else was so i jumped in. I'm high and I haven't worked on computers in a few weeks. When I'm @ school I'm not working. I work in the IT dept of a company.

I was actually going to ask if anybody else had any ideas too.

Does anyone think that this could be a problem? I think it uses Java, maybe was there an update it needed to get? Also, have you installed any software or hardware recently?

Hmm, I need to think about this.

It freezes when you start up normally, but not in safe mode.
You've restored to a restore point - still problems
It won't reformat using the Sony software - now this part has me a bit confused.

I didn't catch this right away, but I see you have XP Service Pack 2. I wonder if having SP3 would make a difference. It hasn't given me any problems on multiple machines, and you can rollback if it gives you troubles.

Start in safe mode, go to run -> msconfig and disable startup programs and services you don't need / recognize.

If it's a freeze it sounds like corrupt software on boot.

Also try checking diagnostic start up in msconfig (only starts whats required by windows)
