Computer Stuff: Making your computer faster

Hi all.
I wanted to make a thread on ways to make your Computer faster rather then just reformat and whatnot. Hopefully this helps some of you out. Post anything you know that can make your computer faster.
Goto start>>Run>>type MSCONFIG & then goto startup on the right hand side.....Uncheck anything you do not need running when you start your computer up....If you're unsure I'd just leave it, or tell me the file name.
Next goto Internet Explorer goto Tools then Internet Options. and clear cookies and cache and temp files.
Other then that just refrag & uninstall any files you do not need. Run ad-aware, spyware doctor, virus scanner, and defrag.
Thats about it, post anything that helps shroomery members out!
Peace have a great Friday <3

alot of having a fast computer is all about prevention. by the time its actually running slow you have so many god damn pieces of spyware and registration edits that you really need to start from scratch.
never use IE, always have a fire wall and virus scanner.

zippoz "in times of widespread chaos and confusion, it has been the duty of more advanced human beings - artists, scientists, clowns, and philosophers - to create order. In such times as ours however, when there is too much order, too much m management, too much programming and control, it becomes the duty of superior men and women and women to fling their favorite monkey wrenches into the machinery. To relieve the repression of the human spirit, they must sow doubt and disruption" "People do it every day, they talk to themselves ... they see themselves as they'd like to be, they don't have the courage you have, to just run with it."

To make your computer faster....
First, you have to know if you have an OEM computer(dell, micron, gateway, HP, etc..) or a computer that is built from scratch. Some companies build computers from scratch like falcon northwest, velocity micro, etc...
Now if you have an OEM computer you most likely will not be able to overclock very well. you'll probably need a program called clockgen. Its software overclocking.
Let me explain what overclocking is. Overclocking is running your computer hardware, faster than the original speed of the component.
Now if you overclock your CPU than you should make sure that your cooling in the case and the cpu is sufficient. OVERCLOCKING CAN LEAD TO FRIED COMPONENTS. IT CAN BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN. If it catches on fire.
Now if you have a "home built" computer like system, then you can most likely overclock without having to use clockgen.
Go into the bios, and look at the multiplier for your CPU and your Front side bus speed(FSB). Basically all you do is manipulate these numbers for a faster computer.
Now you have to be careful to not go to high. Overclocking can cause system instability. So you'll have to test and retest the stability with a program called Prime95. Make sure you load up prime95 so that your CPU load is 100%.
Run this for 24hrs+ and make sure your cooling can handle the added heat. If its stable than you are good to go, and try higher. If its unstable, if it locks up and such or resets, that means you went to high, so go a bit lower. and retest it.
THis is just a brief write up of overclocking there is a lot more too it, but that should give you an idea of how to make your computer faster.

I've had this post saved forever. I'm going to throw out list of file names on my start up list.
Please tell me what they are and give me suggestions on whether I should keep them or not.
Here we go: hpsysdrv
AGRSMMSG
KBD
realshed
RECGUARD
ccApp
UrlLstCk
ps2
lsburnwatcher
CFD
ybrwicon
QTTask
NvCpl
nwiz
NvMcTray
HPWuSchd2
hpcmpmgr
ALCXMNTR
avp
mgrs
yumcjfvo
and that's all of them. I recognized a few that were on there. These ones I'm not so sure of.
All help will be appreciated.
Thanks again.

You can get an idea of what these programs are by going to this site:
http://www.windowsstartup.com/wso/search.php
And to find out what services you need or don't need refer to:
http://smallvoid.com/articles/windows-xp/services/
Other ways to speed up your PC:
- Turn off system restore.
Right click on "My Computer" and select properties. Next, go to the system restore tab and disable system restore. I would estimate that this feature alone can slowdown your computer by 15-20%. This is because the OS has to backup everything that happens to the registry at all times on the fly, and there are easily dozens if not hundreds of modifications happening to the registry every second. This just bogs the whole PC down and eats hard drive space like you would not believe.
System restore is not needed if you do backups of your drive once in awhile and you should be backing up if you don’t want to lose everything. System restore is fine if you don’t mind giving up all that horsepower and drive space just to backup the registry every time it changes.
While you are over at the system properties page, go over to the “windows updates” page and turn off automatic updates. It’s a waste of CPU power for this to be running in the background all the time when Microsoft only posts their updates once a month. Just be sure to keep an eye on the windows update page and download the critical updates as they’re posted.
Next go over to the “Advanced” tab and click on the performance settings button and look over the visual effects panel. You can just set them with the radio buttons for a fast easy change or go custom to suit yourself. These visual effect can slow things down a bit, in fact some of them like the “slide or fade” options make your PC seem slower by making these functions slowdown for a visual eye-candy kind of thing. The ones I like to keep enabled are.
* Smooth edges of screen fonts
* Show windows contents when dragging
* Show shadows under menus/mouse pointers
* Use drop shadows for icons on the desktop
Then go from the visual effects tab over to the advanced tab and select virtual memory. Then change it from system managed size to custom. Most sites say to set your page size to 2x your installed memory size, you can do this but I don’t. I don’t think if you have 1GB of memory installed, that you need 2GB of pagefile. With my system I have 1GB of memory and 256-512MB of pagefile. I made the top range 512MB just in case, but even with large photoshop files with many layers, I’ve never gone above the 256MB of pagefile.
- Disable Disk Indexing
Open windows explorer and right-click on icon for each hard drive and select properties, then uncheck “allow indexing service to index this disk for fast file searching”
Sure it speeds up file searches somewhat, but how often do you do these searches? The trade off is that it slows everything down all the time so that when you do do a search once in awhile it does it a little faster. Turn it off and get the speed increase instead.

You don't actually need to run any of them programs at startup.
Remove them.. half of them sound like spyware anyways.

Er can anyone see this contradiction.
My recommendation would be to get a real anti-virus program; and for that I would recommend Nod32. Best anti-virus software out there and has the smallest memory footprint.
http://www.nod32.com
Theres a cracked version on demonoid, if you have an account.
Also, as someone else recommended (probably the OP; I'm baked ) get Ad-aware.. google muthafucka

You've obviously not heard of Mysql slammer, or any of these:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_computer_viruses
Linux is only secure if you're a competent admin, the same with windows.
On windows you have to worry about virii/adware but on linux you have a lot more control over your computer; meaning more human error; Open ports, vulnerable software, etc.

Your computer's tubes may be clogged or full.

It is not a big truck... it's a series of tubes. For proper performance you must clean and maintain your tubes. This is done by installing the latest versions of all microsoft DRM, and by installing a helpful application known as BonziBUDDY

Internet Explorer
Don't - don't - don't surf the web using Internet Explorer.
Seriously, this is one of the best pieces of advice you can get. It is slow and susceptible to almost all viruses, worms etc etc.
My advice is: try Firefox
It is free and you can use it in addition to IE so you can test it without risk. It is SIMPLER, SAFER, FASTER and far more modifyable than Internet Explorer.
There may be better browsers out there, but switching from IE to FF takes almost no learning effort at all and it really shows you the power of non-Microsoft software.
Give it a chance. It may take a week or two, but you probably will ask yourself why you ever put up with Internot Exploder.
Keep the good advice coming ppl

The number one reason people call tech support is their computer is too slow...and the number one reason for that is malware infections.
It isn't too hard to get rid of though! I'll try to make this easy, so even grandma could do it.
First thing is you need a virus program. If you don't have one I recommend Avast! AntiVirus, it's an excellent full-featured one and it's FREE. Can't beat that!
Next you have to manually clean your startup list, and do it in Safe Mode to make sure nothing is running that shouldn't be.
Reboot your computer and immediately start pressing F8 about once a second (if you see the starting windows screen, you've missed it - reboot and try again). You'll see a text screen of advanced startup options...press the up or down arrow to get to Safe Mode with Networking (so you can use the net) and press enter.
Log in normally (everything will look fucked up) and click Yes to any windows that pop up.
Goto Start>Run> type MSCONFIG and press enter. Click on the Startup tab along the top. This is your startup list. At most, you should have like 15 items checked off in this list. If you have many more, you probably have an infection.
Fire up your web browser and go to http://sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
This site has a list of over 14000 items that appear in peoples startup lists. It has the name that appears in your list (you can search for it), what it is/does, and whether you should keep it.
Go through your whole list and make sure only the things you want are checked. As I said, this should be less than 15 items...I like to keep mine below 10 (or 5 on slower machines).
When your done you can reboot and your all set! That should get rid of 98% or infections...Avast! should clear out another 1.9%...and then theres always the 0.1% that you have to watch for

Once, men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.
