A few computer questions

So I just got a new gaming PC and I am currently downloading counter-strike source. I did a broadband speed tester and supposedly my download speed is at 1.5 MB/s and the download is going at around 100 KBPS, same thing with a battlefield 2142 patch. I had the same problems on my old computer and cant figure out why downloads are so damn slow.

On a separate note, I had a mac previously so I never really worried about viruses, spyware etc... Currently I have symantec antivirus and was curious what other applications you might be able to reccomend.

Any other tips to keep my PC running smoothly would be greatly appreciated.

When you're downloading something the website you're getting it from has to upload it to you and most websites will only upload at about 150kbps maximum.

Aside from your antivirus it's a good idea to run Lavasoft AdAware to keep everything running well, unless your antivirus also protects against adware and spyware.

Remember to run Disk Defragmenter every month or so too, I always forget to but I hear it's really helpful. :grin:

A new computer is always a lot of fun so enjoy the hell out of it before it's just another outdated paperweight. :awesome:

I'll look into lavasoft just as extra protection even thought I think symantec offers it already. I vaguely remember disk defragging from the last time I owned a PC, I'll have to look up how to do that again.

Enjoying the new computer a lot so far, but Im going crazy with anticipation waiting for these downloads

1.5 MB/s will not get you a 1.5megabyte per second download speed. Speeds that service providers advertise are bit not bytes. You should be getting approxmently 187.5kb per second if your service provider advertises 1.5 MB/s. Run a test a www.speedtest.net if you notice you are not getting 1.5mb/s then you may have spyware. Your service provider may not be giving you as fast as a connection as they advertised. When I had verizon I only got about 1 mb/s download when I was on the 1.5 mb plan. They told me speed vary and if I wasn't getting blow 768kbs then I was getting what I was paying for because it's somewhere in the contact. I know have a new internet provider and get what I pay for for a cheap price ussually rate at 5mbps.

Im on a college connection so I have no clue what the advertised speed is, but the speed test is around 1.5 megabyte and I download files at around 200 KBPS

Go with AVG antivirus and antispyware. Symantec is shitty and uses up a lot of memory.

Agreed, symantec is shittie. They were good sometime in the late 90s I think...

I still took it off of my computer then and found a free alternative. But i was running AOL dialup back then when it was the thing to do.

I think some of you are confusing megabytes and megabits.

At normal high speed internet speeds, bandwidth is usually measured in megabits per second. Ie: 1.5Mbps. There is 8 megabits in a megabyte, and 128 kilobytes in a megabit.

MB = megabyte
Mb = megabit
kB = kilobyte
kb = kilobit

So, op, your download is actually within decent range of what your ISP promised. You are downloading at 0.78 megabits per second.

As for security software, if you are careful enough you can get away with none. AVG antivirus is good, though; and it's free. There are a few good spyware scanners out there. Spybot, Adaware, AVG Antispyware.

Like someone else said, a disk defragmentation every now and then is useful to keep your hard drive seek times low.
