The Real 2012?
    #10045112 -

I had thought it was all bullshit, but what if it's not? I mean if the mayans did actually predict it, they were some crazy astronomers, we still have no idea how they knew about binary stars without the equipment we have today.

If the first 300 debunkings were not enough, I doubt one more time will have any effect.

We're all going to wake up on that day (December 21st, 2012 at 11:00 AM I believe) and go to work.

That's my belief.

I wonder if some enlightened persons are going to wander around on the streets, claiming that's it's all over.

What I don't think is that magical space beings will come down from a mystery planet and invade the earth. The Mayan's may have been much better astronomers than us though.

I want something to happen, but highly skeptical anything will.  It would be cool if we would all wake up into some lucid dream state.

The most likely apocalyptic event to happen in the near future would be the Technological Singularity, but 2012 is cutting it a little close.

I've been thinking about this for a while, and from what I can see our planet is reaching capacity and changing rapidly.  2012 could be a reasonable estimate of when shit starts to hit the fan.  When it does the industrialized nations (aka the ones with enough money and influence to save themselves) will close up and take care of their own and the survivors could emerge into what is a new society, a new age. Or not, what the fuck do I know.  Either way exciting times ahead!

I was reading another article in New scientist awhile ago that said it is virtually inevitable that there will be a major catastophe simply because of the level of globalization. Everything is so connected now that there are just so many things that could go wrong which would set off a major global crisis.

Large global crisis' are certaintly the kind of conditions that could set out a major global change in human outlooks.

I think this will happen also, but there is no telling when IMO.

I can see your point but as i was saying the Mayans' we're bloody good astronomers but also big mystics it could be that good scientific vague prediction simply got convuluted by mystic "it will happen at this date on this time." this sort of thing certaintly still happens today.

I have kind of felt it for several years now but that could be my imagination.

I've been getting my affairs in order. That's the main reason I post on death so much. I want to know it if I can before it happens. I don't want to be too freaked out and scared if things fall apart. I want a plan and I want to just be able to follow it without much hesitation. Believe it or not part of it is getting healthy as possible. Letting go of my attachment to my current experience and realizing it is just a passing moment in history. Then, actually, I want it to happen.:mushroom2:

Actually 2012 would be just about perfect.

These threads fascinate me. Even skeptically inclined Americans just can't shake the possibility of... because there are so many people around them that believe it.

In Western Europe people are bored out of their minds if you talk 2012, atheism, etc.

If something is widely believed in it always becomes easier for us to lapse into that same belief.

I'm British and there is good science supporting global collapse very soon IMHO. It's not just random guesswork and 2012 websites.

The appeal to large numbers is a fallacy and has no impact on this thinking individual.

Actually I think most Americans believe we are indestructible.
