Volvariella bombycina ?

I have seen some pics of the edible mushroom Volvariella bombycina which is a close relative of the paddy straw (Volvariella volvacea) mushroom and grows on hardwood trees.
At least the following 3 websites indicate that is possible to cultivate this species:

Has someone cultivated this species already?
Does somebody know where I can get spores/mycelium from?

It's supposed to be very rare. I've never seen it.

Is it a good edible? I ate Volvariella speciosa once and it is the worst mushroom I've ever tasted. :lipsrsealed:

I also have never seen it here around - think it is usually too cold here for this species.
Since I have never tried this mushroom I do not know how it tastes, but in one of my books it says that it is a very good edible.

On some webpages it says that they have crossed Volvariella bombycina and  Volvariella volvacea through protoplast fusion.
I think that has been done in order to get a paddy straw mushroom that can use more ligninous substrate.
Wonder how that tastes :wink:

Anyway, if someone happens to find such a species I would be grateful if he/she would trade spores/mycelium against cultures of other edibles or something else ...

hello all... maybe i can help a little...its been a while but i think that u can get the spores from frmc.com. also dont kno if u are looking out in the field but i freak anytime i see any whitish mushies with volva a the (stipe?) stem base . the deathly amanitas have volvas (cups?) at there stem bases. i posted in the past some links where ppl had tragicallly mistaken amanitas for paddy straws since i had some interest in V.volvacea myself. so do be careful and good luck.

I would like to find one of this species but I have never heard that anyone has found it where I live - probably too cold ...
But I doubt that one could mistake it for a deadly amanita since they do not grow that high in the trees - or did I miss soemthing  :confused:.

I still have some water stored mycelium from the isolations I made during last year's summer. I am uncertain if it is still viable becuase I have not cracked out those isolates in a long time. If I remember correctly it grows annoyingly slow on the agar I was using. While a found many the year before I last (when I did the isolatiosn), I did not find any this year. It appears to be sporadic, depending on wet, mild summer conditions (at least here in Indania). The other cool thing about this species is that I have never found it growing in anywhere but out of old knot holes in trees where there is lots of broken down wood and other organic matter. It does not matter if the knot hole is near the ground, up in the crown, or on a dead, fallen tree, it still like the knot holes.

Seems as if it would prefer rotten wood ? What do you think ?
Have you ever eaten one of them ?
If you succeed in getting a culture I would be glad if I could trade with you ?!

Yeah rotted wood, and perhaps by default the presence of some other microflora. I am not sure. I have not tired to cultivate it yet. As it turns out, I do not have a culture, but PM me an address, because I have spores.
