Mycelio, do you think with proper selection, you could achieve yields similar to those recorded with V. volvacea? It would be great to have a more temperate species with comparable yields.

We are thinking of growing these on composting palm fronds. We have a friend who just chipped up a ton of them at a nursery.

tripsis, according to one of the links on this post there is a .pdf and it discusses this very thing. the bombycina has a better BE than the Volv. volvacea. i try to attach it for you.

I want to grow these things. It is 109F here and I have a good sprinkler system. Will they grow on grass clippings? When the trading begins sign me up I will make it worth your time.

Thanks houdinihar, I should have checked that paper. I'll have a read of it. Sounds very promising!

Nice grow Mycelio, beautiful mushroom. John, the mycelium you have looks right to me, the cobweb-like appearance had me worried when I first saw it, but that's just how it looks.

trout, according to most sightings these guys are wood lovers-
Quote:
Volvariella bombycina ( Silky Volvariella). Excellent edible and fairly common in TN. They can be found on maple, poplar, elm, beech and oak stumps and logs, they can even be found growing on living trees where the tree has been injured. I have seen them 20 ft. up in a tree. Books say use caution because they have a volva and could be mistaken for Amanita virosa. Two glaring differences is V. bombycina grows on wood and has pink gills, while A. virosa grows on the ground and has white gills. A. bombycina will leave a mushroomy smell on your hands after handling it
the quote above came from this website: Volvariella bombycina
Thomas Volk also says:Quote:
You've found Volvariella bombycina, the tree Volvariella
Again on this webpage: Bombycina
so clearly it appears the natural habitat favors wood, usually dead.
the link i included above [which had already been provided here] for "Experimental cultivation of the silver-silk straw mushroom Volvarielle bombicyna (Per.ex.Fr) Sing. isolated in Vietnam" shows that these researchers did not get any productivity from rice straw, but from seasoned wood sawdust with additives, like we do for shiitake and others of like genera.
eveything presented here by me is from secondary sources. i have no practical experience with this species yet.

Thanks everybody for all the comments. It makes me feel, I had accomplished more than growing just one mushroom.
Regarding fresh wood, please see my comments on the first page of this thread. I'm pretty sure V. bombycina requires bacteria or other fungi to munch on the wood first, so it can easily access the cellulose.
