Volvariella bombycina
    #16682538 -

Hello all,

I am clearly still working things out, as this is the only egg that
this block produced, but it is a step ahead of the first time that
I tried.

...and a very pretty species it is too:

Straight straw.  Let it colonize until I saw the egg forming.  Cut
away the plastic over the egg.

Little more to add for now.

Take care,

JD

That's a gorgeous fruit, JD!

I just transferred a Volvariella volvacea on Thursday and that rascal is running like a rocket ship!  The mycelial mat is already 12cm diameter in two days!  I hope my fruits are as pretty as yours!

Post more pics when you have another fruit please.

Is this from spores or from the culture that is going around?

It is from the culture that you gave me last year.

It was not easy to revive and clean, but it worked.

It is not colonizing at the speed that I have expected, and I have
a following straw sack that does not seem to be consolidating at all,
and might have a mold problem.  This species is not making it easy
for me, but my ignorance is the principal obstacle.

I tried putting one under (with gaps for air) a plastic sheet on
a piece of ground that I had watered well the day/evening before,
but the bugs pounced, seriously, and there is zero visible mycelium
a day later.

I am happy to experiment, and will find what works for me in time.

Along these lines, I birth a new ABM block a bit differently.  I cut
off the top of the sack, leaving a generous collar for the casing
layer which was untreated cactus soil....but I also cut off the bottom
of the sack.  I placed it into an outdoor SGFC and will be watering it
generously.  We will see.

Take care!

JD

You should come over to my place and we will do a giant mason bin grow. I have compost almost ready and a steamer to condition it.:thumbup: If you want a lot of Blazei you gotta do it big. It's a big mushroom and needs lots of substrate.

We will be there tomorrow, if nothing else goes wrong.

I agree on the size of these puppies....they are huge.  I got one
that was a tad squished by starting under the bag, and its stipe was
about three inches thick.

They are good eating too.

I look forward to seeing some magic in person.  :0)

I believe lipa is referring to a 7-gallon Mixing Tray used to mix mortar.  They are very inexpensive for their size ($5.47 Each @ Home Depot) and extremely durable:

Good call OICU.  I did not think of that, but I am sure that you
are right.  They are also called cement mixing tubs, and are sold at
Home Depot here.

Lipa works these things for a living, so I will let him elaborate
on his methods as he prefers.  I am sure that you all understand.

Were you going to drill some holes for drainage and aeration into mason bins or just use it as is? I understand they enjoy a healthy amount of O2.
I really like the idea of using mason bins for agaricus growing, gonna have to try this out. Hope to see your results in the future!

and JD, that is fruit is killer! Thanks for showing us all the way with this species, you're a shroomery pioneer.

My attempt to grow Volvariella bombycina was a complete bust. I used substrate of spent sawdust, plus 2% urea & bran. I must have read somewhere that this is suitable. No growth.

I am a little suspicions of my culture. Not knowing if these were perhaps a little tropical like their extremely tropical V. volvacea cousins, I kept separate slants under both normal storage temp of 34 degrees F, and tropicals storage temp of 52 degrees. The slants stored at the colder temperature have light, wispy mycelium. This is the one I used for my failed bag.

Should the mycelium of this species be light and wispy? There's a good chance that I isolated and purified a contaminant fungus instead of V. bombycina! :frown:

I have found it to be sparse and kinda wirey (sic).

It does not knit a sub together into a tight wad...in fact, like
Hericium can do, it fruits when the sub does not appear all that
colonized.

I tried putting one outside, in the sun (tho under an opaque sheet) and
it was devoured by bugs in one evening.

This species to supposed to grow so fast that it fruits in spite
of these challenges.  I must wonder about the vigor of my genetics.

I have a spore print, and will start again.

I know those tubs but have not thought of useing them. Looks like a good idea for bulk grows of top fruiting species. I need to give some of these cultures a second thought given my summer heat.

Beyond being very cool looking, and being related to one of the
most popular edibles in the world (Paddy Straw Mushroom)...
...nothing.

It is not entheogenic.
