So just how hard are Straw Mushrooms (Volvariella volvacea)?
    #16142665 -

I'm a newb and have only done Cubensis  so far, but I love straw mushrooms. So far I've read in these forums that there's issues with keeping the culture etc, and it seems it might be a better idea to start with a print....It's all a little over my head at this point, so clarification would be helpful.

In the event that Volvariella volvacea are too much at my stage, can you recommend a suitable edible that is a good intro for a newbie?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. if it matters, I have the space, money and time to do things properly, i.e: I'm not a teenager growing cubes under his bed. I like mushrooms of all kinds.

How about reading a good book first? 'Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms' by Paul Stamets would be a good start.

For V. volvacea I would recommend tropical climate and experience with other species. V. bombycina would be easier.

In fact I've ordered that book, but it won't arrive for a few days. I was hoping for some insight from members here. obviously, using the search function with "mushrooms + Straw" was useless. Even using the latin/scientific name brought up little more than the difficulties associated with the species.

Your help is appreciated though, I'm not being sarcastic.

Oysters are the usual 101 starting point for getting confidence growing edibles, they grow on practically "anything" and are very forgiving to beginners.

Well...twisting my rubber arm into growing oysters. My local pub serves: oyster mushrooms in a brandy cream sauce with escargot and sage.

Something I've replicated at home more than once.

Oysters are delicious
