V. bombycina
    #1638318 - 06/16/03 10:06 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I found some Volvariella bombycina on a rotted out stump the other day. They are edible like the V. volvacea. I am attempting to clone it now and then I hope to do some playing around with it. .....It should be more tolerant to low temps than V. volvacea. It grows on wood, but maybe better rotted wood than other wood ship lovers. We shall see.

Cool, so I found another patch. This one was sprouting from a knot whole in the lower trunk of a still living tree. The mature mushrooms sure do attract alot of insects. I was able to find one still in the "egg" stage, so hopefully the tissue will be clean enough to clone from.

good luck r05c03...i am looking for its  genus kin V. volvacea's  spores . so this one has maybe  some parasitic tendencies besides mort wood appetities? can u use (FERMENTED  ) straw as main production substrate like it kin V.volvacea?

It seems to be wood rotter with the same abilities to get into living trees as oyster mushrooms. As far as its ability to grow on straw, I will have to see. There is not infomation on this guy as far as cultivation so everything will be experimental.....but fun, I am sure.

Yeah so I have been find more of this fungus around my "hood". I have been in this area for seven years and I have never found it before. I think there is alot coming up because we have recieved about 11 more inches of rain this month than average.

At any rate today I found some young ones coming from a patch that I already tried to clone from and instead of cloning I ate them. They are pretty good. Distinctly different than oyster, shitake, or buttons.

Also, I think this fellow makes asexual spores of some sort at well, which led me to think that I had contams during my first isolation attempt. It grow pretty slow on my agar fromulation, but it seems to speed up growth when I wrap the plates with parafilm, maybe it likes the increased humidity, or increaase CO2 levels.

Well damn. I thought more interesting stuff would happen, but ultimately only this rather large primordium formed on the agar plate. I was hoping that it would actually break the univeral veil, but it just sort of declined. Any way here is a pic of a primordia on a PDA plate amended with oatmeal, peptone, and yeast extract.
