Ritalin/Concerta might be causing mental problems?
    #9988908 -

Hey i'm on ritalin prescribed for ADHD, and I feel it might be causing social paranoia and mental apathy. Does anyone else who is on ritalin or concerta get this?
Edit: these days I use it mainly as a mental stimulant, and it works fine for that. I only take it when I need to come op with something genius, or when I need to study reel hard. Any thoughts?

Quote:
New Haven, Conn. -- Repeated exposure to low-dose amphetamines
can cause deficits in cognitive performance that last for
several years after the exposure ends, offering insight into
potential harmful effects of chronic substance abuse in humans,
a Yale study has found.

"While previous studies show that acute amphetamine injections
can impair cognition, our report is the first to demonstrate
long lasting-over two years-and possibly permanent cognitive
deficits induced by a brief period of intermittent low-dose
amphetamine exposure," said Stacy Castner, a researcher on
the study. "This research could also lead to potential
treatment of deficits in former drug abusers as well as
potential drug deterrents in adolescents and young adults."

Yep, that's a known side effect of these drugs.

Talk to your doctor and/or parents about it. You could ask them how long the treatment is expected to be necessary. You might want to let them know of any negatives you might be experiencing.

BTW get off of this site before you cause trouble. Come back when you're 18. It'd be terrible if your parents or guardian (or worse, the media) blame this site for giving advice to a minor.

At least in primates.

Are you suggesting that primates are so far removed from humans that whilst it's proven to damage them, it's totally ok and safe for humans?

If this were thalidomide and if it were being tested on guinea pigs, then I'd agree with you, and as time has proven, yes, guinea pigs and humans are mammals, however, whilst guinea pigs did not suffer birth defects from the drug, we certainly did.

Amphetamine drugs are not at all casual things, and should never, ever be considered as such. It is not an ADD/ADHD cure, it's not a cure for fatigue. It's just a fucking dirty stimulant.

No, I'm suggesting that you can do things and set parameters in animal experiments that aren't necessarily representative of real-world, human conditions.

Admittedly however, I couldn't find the specific study that the original article was referring to.
