Ahhhh, thanks.  It was the demonstration part that threw me.

Must be a West Coast term.  All I could think of was some Middle Earth vision where trees were marching up and down in the forest with placards that read, "Don't kill us, the health of the planet depends on it."  The description makes more sense.

pretty certain that Helvella is correct, maybe Helvella crispa (White saddle)

Great shots guys.  That was a wonderful day.

We still had lady bugs in the car the next morning.  Put them on the roses and they started their aphid buffet when the sun came out.

Any luck on IDing that first fungus that was found?  The one that looking like mushroom coin?

Eitherway, can't wait to go back out there.

im thinking maybe a funky lacunosa?.......those hygrocybes are colorful/bright!, ive never found one, gorgeous man.

One of them is Helvella compressa, I have no idea what the other Helvella is.  The top reminds me of the flying spaghetti monster.  (the best god yet, btw)

Peziza is my best guess.

Thats probably because you don't have any redwood in the central valley to hunt under.  They are late season mushrooms. 

This weekend is probably the last good mushroom hunting weekend until October.

Next we went to Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve to pick in a different habitat.

I found this common wood rotter which makes the wood bright red, Phanerochaete sanguinea



And a green wood rotter which turns wood a nice shade of turquoise, Chlorociboria aeruginosa

(sanguinea is latin for blood; aeruginosa is latin for corroded copper)

Tick bites are for noobs, now I use DEET insect repellent around my neck, waist, and any other place they could get in when going through the brush.  I saw 50 ticks on me last weekend and no bites.


chemicals like N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide, are for noobs.

all natural cedar and jewelweed for me

Nice work.

Thanks for mentioning Chlorociboria aeruginosa.  I saw it two days ago but forgot the name.  I see it on occasion.

I absolutely detest DEET, but I wear it when I have to.  I can't stand the smell of artificial chemicals on my body.  :puke:

Better than getting Lyme disease though.  Thankfully we have very few ticks where I hunt.

Rofl.  50 ticks on you Alan?  Thats nuts!  I had none when I was out there, and even after a shower, I woke up the next morn with one burrowed into my ankle, about 90% in.  Little fucker.

How do you apply the cedar?  I would probably make a tincture of the leaves.

I notice a lot of people are using geraniol, that stuff smells great.

At least, probably more.  It was worth it though, I went along a ridgeline in the middle of nowhere and found lots of mushrooms and two massive pot farms.
