It's the common language, not the national language.

Do you really want the federal government in all its "wisdom" telling you which language you are required to speak?

And if it means getting fired over, then yes I would like the government to solidify that for me.

If speaking Spanish is a prerequisite for the job, and you can't speak spanish, then go elsewhere.

Personally I think it's a pretty ridiculous policy on the part of the fire department to hire people who do not speak the common language of the people they are protecting, but since I'm not running it, it's not my call.

You do not have a right to work anywhere you want.

If we didn't have such illogical ethnocentric policies none of this would even be an issue. Somehow America went from being the great melting pot of the world, to fuck you this is America. Our greatest trait (<<is that spelled right?) as a nation IMO is that we are a prime example of the evolutionary concept "biological fitness" being applied to culture rather than genetics. We grew strong as a people because an immensely diverse population was allowed to freely compete with each other over hundreds of years. The strongest, smartest, and most capable rose to the top and propelled our civilization to great advancements. Now we seem to act as though we have reached the pinnacle of cultural evolution as if such a thing even existed.
