The future of biotechnology through genetic engineering
    #9932779 -

I only really started learning about genetic engineering and I'm amazed at how simple it is to alter the genome of simple bacteria. Great things will be done in the field of genetics in the future but as for engineering bacteria its such a quick process we could probably come up with cool shit in no time. Not enough research being done IMO the government should promote home experimentation and get everyone in on the action to speed up there process. Heres something I was wondering though

Inserting gene carrying plasmids into bacteria is so simple it can be done in your own kitchen but I wonder how many people are actually playing around with this. What would you all say the consequences would be if everyone started genetically engineering bacteria as a hobby. Vast range of new bacteria strains being let loose?

We can think of a wide range of applications for genetically engineered bacteria but one I was thinking about recently is chemistry. Bacteria can be modified to produce all sorts of different compounds for us. How far off do you think it is until the average man has access to chemical synthesizing modified bacteria?

I think there's a big future for GMO algae. Specifically, algae for fuel.

I too would like to see genetic engineering come down to the hobby level so that non-professional individuals could engage in it.

The theory is straightforward.  In practice however, I believe its much more difficult to achieve.

I recall many microbiology graduate students having difficulty inserting genes.  It can take months on end and their are limitations to the technique.

Yeah some of the most important discoveries are made by the hobbyist. Shortwave radio propogation for instance it was amateurs that discovered shortwaves can be used for long range transmission.

From what i've read, it's so 'easy' it would only take one psycho with enough education to create a deadly strain.  Sorry forgot the source, it was a while back.  Not sure how much truth there is behind that statement, but it was stated pretty matter-of-factly.

there are 2 AWEsOme TED talks about this. the one by juan enriquez is amazing, in terms of growth in this field. go watch it and lets talk about that shit:

I can't remember who the other one was by, but ill remember soon.

It's great until you try making an alteration and there's hundreds (or thousands) of random changes in the rest of the genome.

Whats wrong with that?  Random changes are the cause of all the bio-diversity we see today.

Speaking of biodiversity, do you have any idea what escaped quick-growing crops could do?  The GM catfish getting back into the wild is going to have some consequences

Vast strains of new bacteria are already being let loose

It is very easy for gene transfer to occur in bacterial plasmids.  Conjugation, transduction, and transformation all happen frequently and are capable of transferring DNA.  A common example is the Lactococcus lactis plasmid pk214 which has segments from many bacterial hosts ranging from E. coli to mycoplasma.  The ease at which gene transfer occurs in bacteria is a huge health concern today, resulting in many new strains of antibiotic resistant bacteria...and it is already a big area of research
