society makes my mental health worse.
    #9857088 -

the stress of jobs, education, all the pressures from society make my mental health worse.

one stressful period of time can fuck me up far a while, mood swings, voices, hallucinations, huge urge to get fucked up on any drugs i can get my hands on cause all i wanna do is escape.

No meds really help, i don't like 'em, working with a psychologist for nearly 2 years.

I can't function the way this society does and i won't ever be mentally healthy because of all the pressure and the fast pace. I'm always feeling good in the summer because i can do all the stuff i want then, no pressure, no bullshit.

Every time i have a job or I'm in education, I'll be fine for weeks or months then i just breakdown.
I don't believe we are supposed to live and work some of the ways we do, like drab offices, endless paperwork, bland nutrient-less food, anxiety.

just a random rant

There are many beautiful things about life but they all seem to get smothered in all the other bullshit.

So you're gonna tell me:
Meditation, medication, try this herb, wear this flower in your hair, relax take it easy, play an instrument, drink some water etc.

fuck

I know what you mean. It's an unfortunate reality that we 'have' to work and do all the other bullshit that modern life entails.

I'd love to just go out in the woods and live there with some friends. At the same time, we are social beings and interacting in a society is crucial for brain development and emotional balance. The more often i have to do things that make me uncomfortable, the more comfortable I become with these things.

I often get the feeling of every part of my being yearning to lay in a forest and let the vegetation grow over me and lay there silently, not feeling cold or warmth, just being still and content. To just escape from life. I guess I don't deal all that well with the pressures of everyday life. But I can't just become part of the forest, or go live in the mountains (I know I 'can', but it's not reasonable), so I have to learn how to adjust and cope.

I hear what y'all are saying. I have such heightened senses and am such a sensitive individual, this world kills me a million different ways each day.

This society doesn't have our health and well being in mind, unless you're loaded.

Start doing some stuff which makes you feel free of society. Something really unconventional. Like growing your own food. Or installing solar panels and attempting to free yourself from the electricity grid and create power in a more eco friendly way. Something which gives you purpose and feeling of freedom from society.

Human beings weren't designed to spend their days in fluorescent cubicle farms constantly being blasted with electronic stimulus.  If it feels shitty and unhealthy for you, it's because it is.  My health is worse when I have to go to that place and deal with corporate robots everyday, no doubt about it.

Human beings weren't designed period.

OP:  Modern western society offers many more option than nearly any other society in history.  Those pressures you feel come from within (or maybe the family).  You dont want to do them, you dont have to.  You can take on as much responsibility as you want... from being a manager/owner of a business to living near a soup kitchen on the street.  Most people choose something in between, but the choice is yours.

Nobody has to do anything.  You could sit in the corner of a room and do absolutely nothing for as long as you want.  But obviously you would find it preferable to get up at some point, so you can eat, make a living, or do other things you want to do.  They are all choices.

Don't do anything you don't want to do.  If there is something that you find very important, such as earning money, then recognize that it is you who decided it's important.  So do it without dragging your heels about it, and life will get a whole lot easier.

I think the problem is assuming this pressure comes from somewhere other than themselves.  All these bad feelings about society, all the 'bullshit'... it comes out of your head, not society.  If society tells you something is important, it isn't important unless you agree.

If it's just a habit of wishing everything was easier, I recommend quitting that habit cold turkey.  That one's a killer, a life-ruiner.  The irony is that it all gets easier when you stop wishing for it to be.

I agree entirely. Note the apostrophes surrounding "'have'".
I put these there knowing that someone would tell me how we don't 'have' to do anything.
Of course, we don't really have to do much at all, but life can become extremely difficult when you take this route. So the option of not 'having' to do the things we don't like isn't really a practical option for many of us.

I think why it may be so hard to stop it all is up to this point in your life, you've allowed certain thought patterns to form, so much that instead of making a conscious choice in a situation, you react in the way that your thoughts/brain-mind are conditioned to react. It's a matter of purging these thought patterns so that you can make some lee-way for yourself.

I'm addressing this to anyone stuck in this sort of rut (which includes me). Check out The 100% Brain Course by Melvin D. Saunders, it contains tons of healthy excercises for this sort of work (purging obsolete thought patterns). Not that a book will change your life, but if you practice some of the excercises they really help to become a happier, more intelligent, emotionally rounded individual.

I'm not addressing this to any particular poster, just the ones it may pertain too. In no way do I want anyone to think I'm talking down to them as if 'i've made it' or something, cause I sure as hell haven't, but I hope it in some way helped! The resources to change oneself are here now, it's a matter of honing ones mind to be able to accomplish YOUR 'own' will.

Edit: BTW, I've worked with some of the excercises in that book and so far I've seen positive results in several areas of my day to day. Some other reading sources: Undoing Yourself with Energized Meditation, Prometheus Rising, and Angel Tech; A Modern Shamans Guide to Reality Selection. Again, these books won't do jack for you until you decide to use the knowledge within them. Again, this isn't directed at anyone in particular.

Doing nothing is not practical, no.  But it's too easy to forget that we are calling the shots, that we are doing things because we want to, rather than have to.  There is a tremendous difference in the enjoyment level between doing something out of a sense of obligation and doing it out of desire.

You don't even need to do different things to experience this difference; just toss out any thought of being 'forced'.  It keeps your mind on what you want instead of what you don't want.  Big dif.

Your society is not THE society.
The world is huge.

Sometimes, it pisses me of how ethnocentrist people whine about their neibourghood being shitty, and calling it "society", or "the world".

However, if you don't think you're in the right place, go somewhere else, move.

I agree with this statement.  Yes, modern society has pressures.  I think I'd rather deal with the modern era, then say, knowing if I don't farm the land, I'm going to die once winter comes and I run out of food and slowly starve to death.

I don't think one can make the argument that exhausting, physical labor is the way we were "meant" to live either (or any other way for that matter).

I wouldn't be so sure. I feel so 'free' and 'real' when I'm going for a long run or a hard work. I feel like I can just shake off everything that usually weighs me down (and gets me down.) The feeling of extreme contentment at the end of an intensely long and hard day is pretty hard to match.
