Very freaking cool. The minute I saw the title of this thread I had what I thought was an original idea but it turns out my idea is exactly what this thread is talking about. Using electromagnetism to deflect bullets. Interesting stuff.

Not really.  It uses electromagnetic sensors to detect the flight path of the bullet.  If the bullet is determined to be a danger to the wearer, then it imparts an electric shocks of some sort to contract certain muscles in a way that will allow you to dodge bullets.

Hmm seems like a bullet would be going to fast to make moving out of its way very effective, especially if you had to move several inches.

How fast do you think sniper bullets go?

They go about 900 yards per second and most shots are in the range of 500-1500 yards I believe.  So you would have .5 to 1.5 seconds to move, plenty of time for muscle impulse to move you.  This isn't a though process it's going to be in involuntary twitch if I read correctly which should allow you to move on the order of milliseconds.

But why?

When you burn your hand on a stove you move from it quicker than .5 seconds to avoid further damage. This is the same concept provided the armor doesn't malfunction. This seems SO expensive though!

Imagine if several bullets were fired at you, or a machine gun burst. You would be jumping around all over the place. I wonder how much of jolt this thing gives you, it could be quite a lot to make you move out of the path of a bullet.

lol I'd love to see some of the failures of this. Rip people apart and break spines, and what not. Maybe malfunction completely and take over the body, causing the wearer to rape someone, for the lulz of it?

I wouldn't want to be the test subject. With that amount of force being applied to your body it wouldn't surprise it does break spines and stuff as you say. I think it would also be very painful. Type of thing which you only want to happen to you if it means dodging a bullet.

A typical military sniper round has a muzzle velocity of around 2700 fps and is fired from around 2500 feet away.  By the time the round reaches the target, it is moving quite a bit slower, but still fast.  It would be fair to assume that the system has at most one to two seconds to react, with best case conditions.  Muscles should be fast enough to yank the body out of the way.  Of course, if the sniper is closer then the free time to react is quickly reduced making your point valid; I wouldn't want to be a test subject.  :smile:

I wonder how they would test something like this? It seems using a dummy wouldn't be very effective because it doesn't have muscles. Maybe they will have to use dead bodies normally reserved for medical purposes.

Probably by testing with a person but simulating a bullet to see how the body moves/reacts.  Basically, feeding the computer false sensor data.

I wonder if the movement is directed to push you away from the path of the bullet, or if it's just designed to push you away in any direction? It seems the latter would be much easier and almost as effective.

I would love to be able to to tell you but it seems that the patent application page has been suddenly withdrawn and the text is no longer there.

The way I remember reading it though it says out of the bullet path.  While arbitrarily moving you might be easier, I don't think the wearer will find the same appeal with the system.

Well, I suppose even though it's easier just to make the wearer move in any direction, in the hope that he'll be moved out of the bullet path, if you're technologically advanced enough that you can actually build a system like this it probably isn't that much harder to incorporation an accurate bullet-path predictor too.

I guess it all depends on how well the radar can detect the bullet's location and plot a path for it.

If I read correctly the entire premise behind the system is to use electromagnetics to plot the trajectory and move you out of that trajectory.

The problem is, bullets come in multiples. Unless you can easily return fire, its completely useless...  and at that point you mught as well just make a droid...
