Laptops: Dell vs. IBM
    #4681556 - 09/19/05 01:20 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Which kind of laptops do you prefer, Dell or IBM?

I'm in the market for another laptop and a friend of mine made the comment that "Dells are for students"

He's trying to lean me more towards an IBM becuase this laptop will be used for business.

I have a Dell now... its not bad, but maybe some of you can help me weigh my decision?

Thanks for you opinion!

Lana

I'd go for IBM, Dell is crap overall.

dell is crap and if they do any repairs, you get refurbished parts... there service and support suck

IBM on the other hand shipped me the wrong model and it took 2 weeks for them to give me my money back

either way, you could have a shitty problem that's totally out of your control. Both those companies make so much money, that any one consumer doesn't really matter to them.

Lana,

I just got a new Dell laptop (Inspiron 700m) so I was facing this same question like a month ago. What it comes down to are IBMs tend to be better engineered while Dells tend to be less expensive. IBMs emphasize functionality, Dells emphasize sleekness and aesthetics. I ended up going with the Dell simply because they were running a promotion and I got it for about $800 less than an equivalent Thinkpad. I gave up a slightly larger keyboard, a trackpoint pointing device and perhaps better service but to me it was totally worth it. I love my Dell laptop, light as hell, fast, awesome screen, etc. and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. Honestly though, the best way to do this is pick out what models you'd get from both companies, configure them the same so you can compare prices, then check out reviews and see which one is most worth it to you.

Oh and remember IBM sold their laptop division so that Thinkpad won't be a 'real' IBM anyway.

Peace,

-Y

Hehe...

Or Sony... or Alienware...

The thing about laptops is there's a lot of variability between models. Pretty much every manufacturer sells some great machines and some total duds. Shit even HP has a few nice ones these days. That's why it's important to find several models from different manufacturers which would meet your needs, then compare them based on price, features, reviews and customer satisfaction.

I work in computer repair. Toshiba Sattelites are the most difficult and frustrating laptops to work with, and the most frequently in for service. Dells are generally CRAP, and their desktop design is just retarted (internal design.) E-machines (owned by Gateway) are fairly decent, and generally cost much less. Sony VIAOs are good laptops, although a bit more expensive, and if you don't really care about weight or bulk, and are willing to spend a bit more, the newer HP special edition laptops are top notch. You'll never hear me recommend HP over another company again, but the new laptops are of good quality, have good components, and really nice hi-definition widescreens.

i work in computer repair also. and.... i used to work for dell. i would never own a dell. we see more dell laptops by far compared to other laptops. i would say that given the option between a dell laptop and ANY OTHER laptop... i would go with the other one.

Eh alienware laptops are pretty questionable.
I just bought an asus z70va with a 2ghz centrino, 2 gigs of ram, 100 gig hard drive, ati x700 video card for under 2000. Its been serving me quite well.

I agree- I'd NEVER recommend a Dell over anything. The reason I didn't mention Alienware is because they're typically much more machine (and expensive) than a casual user needs.

I suggest ACER, like DELL with a prepared install cd.
But the systems i've seen never show signs of errors.
I myself have an ACER Travelmate 240.

> dell is crap and if they do any repairs, you get refurbished parts...

It is very common for vendors to send refurb parts for warranty repairs... Apple, Compaq, and HP all do this. I haven't had to fix many IBM laptops, but I am fairly certain that the parts they shipped were new, not refurb. The only gripe I have about IBM is the cost of parts out of warranty... If you go IBM, sell the laptop before the warranty expires and buy another. The cost of a simple part (with IBM), out of warranty, is usually more than the cost of a new computer.

The only reason I don't recommend Toshiba and Sony is because it is next to impossible for us to get parts, but I am not in the US so things may be different up there.

Alienware is ABSOLUTE SHIT, they tack on an extra $1,000-$2,000 for their fancy paint job and that little alien head.

All they do is buy the laptops from Falcon Northwest, add some paint, and jack up the price an obscene amount.
