alright....so i picked up an old laptop for free......an IBM Thinkpad 365XD..... 40 mb ram, 1 gig hd, and i think a pentium 120 chip, along with a 4x ide cdrom......
really wont be doing much with it....may use it for work related word processing stuff...and i would like to get internet on it too....that would be all.....
now my question: i would like to learn some linux and figure this may be a good little computer to play with.....
could anyone suggest a good linux distro for this older machine?
or am i better off(for my intended uses) to just leave windows '98 on it??
any input would be greatly appreciated

Linux will of course be better than windows 98
I installed ubuntu on a thinkpad, not sure what specific model though. It works nice. Ubuntu basically set everything up itself.

Vector Linux for no brainer install with all the things you listed working out the box and runs great on a 380D
Gentoo stage1. Seriously, use DistCC and mount /var to a network drive of a more powerful macine. Not for the faint hearted but I got an amazingly light and lean installation onto a Thinkpad 380D P100 40MB RAM 1.3GBHDD.

check your bios to see if you have booting from cd-rom enabled. usually you hit F1 right after you reboot. it should work.

also make sure that CD-ROM boot is chosen before Hard Drive boot...
