who here owns a cat in an appartement ?
    #9771593 -

i wonder, we have a 110 m² = 1184.030 ft² appartment with a balcony but no garden access.

wed love a kittie in our flat but we worry that it would not be able to go out into
a garden and live some of its "natural life" and somehow we would feel sorry for it because of that.

so, who of you guys actually is in a situation alike, having a kittie in a flat without garden access ?

share your opinions please

A good friend of mine has a cat in a 2-bedroom apartment, of modest size.  It's a kitten, and is getting older/bigger - and seems to be doing just fine.  It runs around and plays, is spontaneous and somewhat demented... but seems to be doing allright.

My girlfriend has THREE cats in a small one-bedroom apartment.  If the cats are not used to being outdoors,
there shouldn't be any problem with keeping them inside.  Aside from giving them good attention, playing
with them and having a litterbox / scratching posts, the hardest part will be dealing with all the hair!

thank you for pointing this out, this is a major point when cats do not spend most of their time outdoor,
all the hair will stay indoors !

man man man, so much to consider, it just does not seem right to me if they cant get out !

Yeah but a lot of people raise cats and like never let them outside once.. purely indoor cats.
I know if I was a cat, I'd be pissed. But the cats don't seem to mind that much... or do they????

both of my cats are indoor cats and we live in a flat roughly the same size as yours. actually, when i got the two of them, it said specifically on the purchase contract that they would not be allowed to go outdoors. why?

well firstly, we live in the city. it's unsafe for a cat to be in the city anyways, there's many hazards which could eventually lead to their demise, i.e. being hit by a car.

second, domestic cats don't HAVE to be outdoors. i've unbiasedly listened to both sides of the debate, some say that cats should be able to exercise their predatory instincts, frolic in the grass and sun but keep in mind that domesticated cats aren't apart of the natural mini ecosystem (at least in the countryside in this country they're not). keep in mind that cats hunt and in turn kill animals such as squirrels, birds, etc. cats can develop diseases from killing these animals such as feline HIV, FeLV, etc, get parasites such as fleas, ringworm and they can in turn be killed by other bigger predatory animals.

a cat can be happy indoors if it's been subjected to living indoors since being a kitten. in my opinion, i would say get 2 cats so that they'd keep each other company and won't long for your attention and get lonely after some time. also, get a cat climbing tree with a scratching post. they'll be able to climb, play, catnap and do what they seem to like a lot, sharpening their claws. there are some good cat climbing trees from europet for example for just 100e.

make sure the cat(s) has plenty of toys so they can practice their instincts by hunting for them  toy mice are cheap...a bag of them are about 2e and last forever.

also, in regards to cat hair, if you don't want balls of fluff all over the place then don't consider getting a cat with long hair. i have 2 short hair cats and the amount of shedding is minimal. we also have a irobot roomba going around picking up the cat hair twice a week scheduled to go around when we're at work. :p

if you have anymore cat related questions such as how much it would cost for maintenance don't hesitate to msg on irc

That's correct

My cat is purely an indoor cat, shes fine but I also like in a 3 floored house so she has lots of space. Cats don't really need much space, you're apartment will be fine for the cat. Keep it as an indoor cat to keep it from catching any fleas or anything.

You should really get a cat dude, they kick ass!

They sell lint rollers that work REALLY well for cat fur :

I use these for my cats fur.

I have 3 cats, and they're all indoors, but I DO feel bad that I can't let them have a bit of "natural" living. In fact, it causes me quite a bit of grief.  If you do indeed decide to get a cat, I very strongly recommend getting two that will get along well (maybe you can find siblings or a pair at the shelter, which is an awesome idea, because often pairs are separated at shelters, and this is quite traumatic for them.)  Also, if you only have 1 cat and don't spend a decent amount of time loving and playing with it, it will most certainly become depressed.
Also, don't forget to consider what you will do if you need to be away from the apartment for days at a time.  Who can look after your pets?
Just things to consider.

Thats actually the name. Its made from corn, and it really is the best.
Good luck with your decision.

Cats adjust very well to the hedonistic nature of apartment dwelling.

They really won't mind.

Truth.

We have two very happy, friendly, indoor cats in a small apartment.

Yeah you gotta play with cats and show them love or they won't be happy and they can become pretty viscious with you. Just hold it and pet it and it will keep it happy. Make it attack strings and toys so it still keeps that natural predatory attitude.

My cat loves to hunt a green bean tied to the end of a string.

She will attack such a device for hours.
