Cat vs Dog... Why?
    #2929996 - 07/26/04 10:07 PM (13 years, 1 day ago)

My boyfriend and I were discussing the differences between cats and dogs... I was relating a dog to being more like a child than a cat. It's like with a dog, it needs to be trained into doing the things it should do... like a child, whereas a cat just does the things it's going to do, like it knows instinctually what to do.

What's your opinion of this?

cats are most definatly more independant. kick a dog and it will come right back sucking your ass, kick a cat and it wont have anything to do with ya

ive been around some highly inteligent dogs in my life, and cats cant compare to dogs like these. i swear to anyone i could communicate with and understand my last dog (blacklab/mut) completely and might not ever have another pet.

(her collar fell off and the pound picked her up on my street while i was skiing and when i returned i called the pound and they said "we let her down yesterday, sorry")

Wow, that sucks. I'm sorry to hear that.

I'm not saying that dogs aren't intelligent. I know they can be. I just think that they need to be taught to do what's right. They're smart, and they can learn at a young age, but they need to be taught, they don't just know.

i see what your saying but if cats already "know" then they cant ever learn

dogs figure stuff out about the world more closely to humans than cats

its not that cats are better than dogs or dogs are better than cats, i bet you are a cat person and i am a dog person and together we live in harmony  hah

I've had cats and dogs both over the years. I would have to say I'm a cat person in the end. I just like the independence of a cat. A dog is too damn needy at times for me and I'm too damn lazy to fill those needs. You never have to walk your cats. You never have to run around and play with your cats. And for the most part you just leave your cats alone and they do great. Just keep the litter box clean and put out fresh food every day and they're good to go. If they want attention they'll jump in your lap for a bit.

But a cat will never even come close to the love and devotion you will get from a dog. You just have to be willing to return those feelings if you want to be a good dog owner. And for the most part I'm just too damn lazy to spend that much time with an animal.

cats are for people who dont really want the hassle of taking care of their animal, but they arent much more then odd creatures with a mind of their own.

Dogs were recently discovered to be as smart as dolphins and the great apes, putting them as one of the most intellegent creatures on earth.

altough you can train cats it's a little more frustrating... I taught mine to fetch, roll over, play dead and to climb up me to get food from my mouth... it learned on it's own to climb on the counters and sample the food

dogs have a bigger food drive, its why they train with so much ease.

Especially labs, my god their appetite is nuts

Funny...I've been bitten by more dogs then cats.  But a cat bite gets infected much easier.  A dog mouth is much more sanitary for sure!

meet baby...

Baby will eat anything... I trained baby after he was 2 years old when I got him, I never use treats to train an animal, always a lot of love and attention... baby is one of the 2 most obedient dogs I?ve ever owned, the other was a little smarter but she also didnt like being trained...

dogs can learn to sit and lay on thier own... i've seen people's dogs that have had absolutely no training to sit or lay, and they just know 'sit' means to sit. like my uncle's dog for example, he's a lame o, and my uncle never spent any time with him, but the first time i told him to sit, BAM he sat... same with laying... and "come here"...

i have cats, and i never used a litter box... it's lame... so my cats never came inside before cause they couldnt learn to shit outside...... if they have to go.. they'll just go... right behind the tv usualy... like you stupid cat... but a dog, it'll hold it for absolutely as long as it can, and let you know it needs to shit... cats will just go reguardless.

These were my two boys:

Koa - choclate lab mix
Indy - pure bred beagle

After a few years I realized they weren?t getting the care they deserved from me. I found better homes for both of them.

Koa still lives locally with a family (where he gets to sleep with the youngest child each night). We still see him on occasion.

Indy went to Northern California with my in-laws. They already had a Jack Russel mix (who Indy loved being with) and now both dogs go bird-hunting with my father-in-law on a regular basis.

I would say to anyone...if you are not a good owner then at least have the decency to find a good home for your animals. Now I just have my cats...

i take the easy way out and train with food, as one person stated somewhere 'a lab's appetite is legendary'

as a puppy, my lab just wants to play or eat
