I'm for this idea, but think it should be organized under a section of the Shroomery. I wouldn't feel comfortable profiting off of other people's teks when they're here for free, and were created to continue the free-to-all knowledge base that makes this site so wonderful.

Although, if it's for free to watch on here, some people would still buy it if it were offered in DVD format. There's an internet movie called Zeitgeist that I bought even though it's free online, just so I could have a hard copy. All it is is a burned DVD with a new label on it inside of a paper sleeve, and I don't feel like I wasted the 5 (? maybe 10) bucks on it.

If RR wants the charity, we could put something up when people go to buy it that says something about how he put his life savings in to the movie and got screwed over by Wal*Mart and internet pirates. He's probably happy without it, though.

I wouldn't consider it a charity at all. More of a compensation for the endless time he spent trying to educate all of us morons on the subject of cultivating mushrooms right. :biggrin:

sounds like a cool idea. Let me know if you need a chapter about how to set a cool environment in which to "studying" certain strains. Possibly a list of enjoyable things to do whole studying. I would be all for that i got a camera!

I'm still pretty new around here, but the way I see it, this is a good project. If nothing else, it greatly supports universal interest in mycology by making information for more advanced techniques far more accessable. In addition, it'd be nice to fend off a lot of repeat questions from newbies (not that I am not one, and no offense intended, but it CAN be annoying) by being able to just say, watch the freaking video.

On the note of RR, though, I'll say I'm sure just about everyone here owes something to him; he certainly knows his stuff and is rediculuosly supportive, and does a big part in holding the community together. Personally it'd be very nic eto be able to give something back, but, I would not assume that he would be alright with basically recieving donations from the community. Just my two cents.

The idea of individuals filming teks that can help out is what this forum is founded on.  However, when you start talking about a DVD, I don't really think anyone has considered the costs involved.  DV video uncompressed will fill up a DVD in only a few minutes.  If it's going to be put online at youtube, you have to butcher it to high heaven to get within the 10mb bandwidth maximum.  You can see that in the quality of the videos I posted at youtube, compared to the quality of the exact same videos I put up on my own site.

I have already filmed several mini-greenhouse teks, a full section on fruiting parameters for the most common species, a full chapter on contamination with pictures of the most common molds for identification, and a section where I show in video how to apply a salt paste to trichoderma on a straw log to get through the end of the flush without tossing it out. Those wouldn't fit within the two DVDs, so I elected to leave them out of Let's Grow Mushrooms in order to concentrate on the actual teks for making substrates, casing material, agar work, grain to grain transfers, etc.  By only putting the shotgun terrarium tek on the video, it was hoped that any astute grower could apply the shotgun tek to a mini-greenhouse without additional instruction, thus the whole thing could fit on two DVDs.

My original intent was to produce a follow-up DVD with the above content on it.  However, the cost of professional replication via glass masters, the cover artwork, the disk artwork, and the cost of another UPC code, copyright registration, etc., is simply too high to get ever my money back, when illegal downloaders steal 100 of my videos for every one that gets sold.  As I said in the other thread, when that situation changes, I might do it.  Until then, those who feed the torrents are serving to keep information and new teks bottled up, rather than spreading knowledge.

Thanks for the idea of the paypal donations, but quite frankly I could never accept that.  I appreciate the thought, but I'm fiercely independent and believe in the concept of earning a living by the sweat of my brow. I began working on Let's Grow Mushrooms in 2002, and was set back in 2004 for several months when I broke my leg in a backpacking accident.  All-in-all, the project took five years of filming, editing, and production before release.  If I can't recover the costs honestly, then I'll consider it 'my bad' and move on.

If you guys will make high quality, not webcam videos, I could consider hosting them on my site on a discrete page titled 'user videos' and provide the bandwidth needed.  I already have two servers, one for the site itself, and another dedicated server for streaming video.  However, I would insist that any 'teks' filmed show legal edibles only.

As said in the other thread, I'm negotiating with amazon.com for streaming content where the DVD could be downloaded legally, or rented for a 30 day period, but not saved on a computer.  If we come to terms, I would be putting disk 1 with the basic growing teks as a separate download from disk 2 with the more advanced teks, so you could get them individually for half the cost.  If that works out, I'll be putting up Let's Grow Mushrooms disk 3 with the info on fruiting parameters, contamination, and greenhouse building for online download only.

I appreciate the thoughts and the nice comments.

Consider adding a spawn bag tek, you too RogerRabbit, and I'm on board all day long. I've got spawn bags mastered and I can show people how to easily prepare a bulk substrate (the right way), put the bulk substrate into spawn bags for smaller more manageable handling, sterilize the substrate (remember the substrate is in sealed spawn bags), inoculation, and final stages of handling for fruiting and subsequent flushes.

I'm here to spread knowledge and bring out the newer techniques that allow a person with a room as small as 6' X 4' grow massive amounts of mushrooms!

see right there, a man took a tek, mastered it and worked out the flaws and wants to share it.  thats how its done.:thumbup:


this project could take a long time to get all updated teks involved.  but it would be so worth it not to have to read/dig through all the old/outdated teks here and the I grew mushies out of my ear teks.lol 

I recommend Large_doses Pasteurizing coir tek

and spongiforms plastic tek.

agar has invaluable info on many of his threads.

ottos bucket o'fungus tek is very good.

there are' more threads that have great teks and they just need to be replicated in video form. (doesnt have to be by the member that made them, unless they want to, just by some one who knows how to follow directions to the T and emphasises on the clean environment/work area). 

I am currently trying to get my hands on edibles to grow and perfect techniques for my own local business.  and will be more than happy to share my how-to in video form when I am able to.

we need an Outdoor Cultivator also to help out with some of the best outdoor teks.  I know some basics but by no means do I know any teks for outdoors.  growing patches in the woods can be greatly rewarding.

just some input to add. hope this helps a lil.

Alright, I'm not even gonna finish readin the posts before handling this one...

First, "private matters".  If I'm not mistaken, I didn't spy or tape phone-calls to find any of these matters out.  If I remember correctly (seems like I can almost remember the thread this post was in, even) I believe it might have been *gasp* RR himself who make these "private matters" public info for everyone here.  Think on that before accusations in my direction.

Second, where the hell does a "Video Tek DVD" become "Let's talk about RR's personal life."  I never said, led anyone to believe, hinted toward or insinuated anything of the sort, and any remarks overlooking that fact are nothin more than an attempt to stir shit.

Third, you're right on one point.  He never asked for donations.  What he DID ask was for what was *rightfully* his.  Don't consider this a donation.  Consider this my attempt (and the attempts of those with the experience and who give a fuck) to take it upon ourselves to not only help this communities current and future members, but to replace what's stolen by 90% who post here. 

Fourth, if you want to think of it like that, we'll do it this way.  Everyone can help me make this video, and the money'll be MINE.  And no one will tell me how the fuck to spend MY money.  I'll give it to whoever, whenever I want to.  If I choose to give it to RR, then that's what I'll do.

Finally, the "unwanted attention..."  I don't think this site is any more private than any other site.  Last I knew, the internet was almost, slightly close to being on the edge of... nearly... PUBLIC.

1)  I never said anything about illegals or edibles or medicinal or fuckin Mario Brothers mushrooms.  I'll let people use their own judgement.  As far as I know, the people in other countries can grow any of them (and if they do, then it'll be posted in the video that it was grown in a country where such things are legal)

2)  I'm not selling shit in his name.  I'm selling it in the name of continuing and bettering mycology.  By default, his name won't be attached, unless he chooses to.  Same as any other members.  I've givin a list of members who'd like to work on this project.  Did I list any members who said they didn't want a part of it?  Or for that matter, did I list names to anyone besides those who specifically stated they supported and wanted to help?  I didn't think so.

3)  Curious...  What's wrong with dedicating (yes, just dedicating) a MYCOLOGY video to a great MYCOLOGIST?  When a fuckin' actor wins a Grammy, does he personally converse with God and Christ before he gets on stage and thanks Jesus like Jesus did the acting for him?  I didn't think so.

No, seriously though, it's not a "donation" or at least not in my eyes.  To me, and I'm sure everyone who's on board, it's payment for teaching us (yes, an HONEST, DESERVED, EARNED check) everything and sharing everything you have.  Consider informing this forum a "second job."  And, we've got a LOT of back-pay to hand over.  ^_^

Awesome.  This is a good start, for real.  Alright, I think we have enough together that we could get some good planning started. 

First things are first.

1)  MODS:  Any way we can earn a sticky on this thread? 
2)  Ten Members:  What are some of the topics you'd each like to get videos on?  Kinda specific.  As in, not just "Fruiting chambers," but what TYPE of chambers.  Not just substrates, but what KIND of substrate.  Stuff like that.  If we can get a few good ideas rolling, I could probably get an idea how we'll break them down and get the thing organized.  At that point, it's just whenever you get time, do some videos (for our purposes, a well lighted room and a camcorder or digital camera or even a decent quality web-cam would suit our purposes.
